Sony Xperia Z1 vs HTC One M8 Camera Test

A quick look at the cameras on the Sony Xperia Z1 vs HTC One M8 and how they perform against each other.

M8 for sure. The colors are richer in the M8.

Although the Z1 & Z2 share similar/identical hardware, the hardware is only as good as the software running it. Sony did a great job with the Z2 fixing all of the issues that people complained about. So i don't think calling it a M8 vs Z1/Z2 comparison is fare. The Z1 has none of the fixes applied to the Z2. Just for full transparency id call it a Z1 comparison & do the Z2 when you actually have one. The M7 & M8 have identical sensors as well, the duo system is not used in normal situations. So since the Identical sensor in the M8 was shown with the improved software to go with it its only fair to do the same for Sony. Hope to see a true comparison soon. I own the M7 & was disappointed in the improvements to the camera(& removal of OIS) in the M8 which kept me from getting it right away. The Z2 is now the device im really looking at seeing as Sony did a great jod at least on paper addressing evey single issue people reported. Hope to see it soon. Cheers.

You're wrong there, the Z2's camera is much better than the z1. The fact the use the same sensor doesn't make them the same. Change the title of this video

The Sony z1 and z2 are totally different cameras and the z2 can do 4k recording. The detail in the Sony image is obviously 10 times better. Much better detail, colours are far more realistic even on my un-calabrated Sony z1 screen. (if you are struggling, look at the windows in the white building across the street. The M8 has two colours. White wall and black window... The Sony has great detail and depth.

especially with the "washed out colours" of the z1 there is an improvement to be expected on the z2. so maybe please repeat the test if you should get a z2 in your hands!

Yeah the M8 outclasses the Xperia Z2 for sure in this video. The video quality on the M8 had better contrast and was was brighter. The clarity was extremely clear on the M8 while the Z2 seemed really dark and made the atmosphere look kind of foggy. Although the M8 did shake a little more compared to the Z2 so the Z2 is superior there I suppose.

I'm sure I heard other reviewers saying that the Z2 software is much improved over the Z1 so having the same lens doesn't equate to same quality pictures.

Even z2 and z1 carry the same camera but they make a quite good improvement on the z2

Z1 wins. M8 has good contrast but it's overexposed, choppy and shaky

Well the HTC One M8 has better colours definitely, but the contrast seems a bit too high, so the sky looks very bright and everything around it gets darker when you lift the camera and the people walking on the street wearing dark clothes or black get lost in any dark background, while in the Z1 you can see how different the colours actually are and not get any objects mixed in with other backgrounds.

Here you can see that pixels who are bigger are superior to more pixels. The M8 is superior in details. Also the colours are more dynamic and realistic. I film with Sony Professional. But this is more like Sony budget level.

The HTC is brighter with more contrast it seems but it's also choppy compared to the Z2. But my question is doesn't the Z2 record in 4K? That should've been tested.

Look at all the building in the HTC M8 video and notice all the building are overblown all the build are blown white, it overblown and over saturate everything. HTC M8 Camera is crap and shaky like a shake and bake chicken.

Sony Z1 have all the colors correctly and doesn't overblown any colors or object and it's panning around seamlessly.

Actualy it's the same lens as the z1 but the overall video is completely upgraded and not the exact same thing as the z1

M8 camera is poor with overblown lights and over saturated colors, the lighting is unstable switching/adjusting when moving and panning around. Notice when the m8 camera is trying to adjust lighting when moving from the sky to the street whereas the Sony stay seamless and the color doesn't over saturate and stay true to life. Sony win easy, only blind fanboys will say the HTC camera is better and only fanboys will say the preferred over saturated colors of the the HTC over the Sony Z1 more natural colors and lightning.
