My cat didn't have too strong a routine as a young adult, but now that she is older, routines are kicking in hard. She watches TV with us in the evening at a certain time, and will do the stand around and meow routine that you described if I don't go to bed at the "right" time. She will sometimes meow and head off on her own, expecting we have to follow.

Every Friday night at bedtime i used to tell my cat that it was Saturday the next morning and that we would be sleeping in. She totally got that and never woke me early like during the week for work. It was soooo weird that she understood but sooo adorable 😍 i still miss her so much even tho its been over a decade ago since she passed

Two big examples of change: 1) going on vacation, even for just a few days, is probably very hard on seniors, especially if they are single. Younger cats are more resilient. Even with a pet sitter looking after her, it’s just not the same. 2) introducing another cat (especially a young cat or kitten) to a senior single cat household.

Younger cats do better in pairs but seniors could find this very stressful. I had ONE exception as a cat parent, and that was the relationship between my Persian and Siamese cats. My Persian was 10 when I brought in my Siamese, who was 1. Both cats were so chill. They got along well. I kept them separate from each other for the initial month too.

When my Siamese was 9 and my current cat was 1, this was hard on my Siamese cat. I unfortunately didn’t see it at the time 😢. The two eventually tolerated each other and learned to stay out of each other’s way., but I admit that it wasn’t fair to do this to my Siamese.

With my current 15 year old cat, this too would make things worse for her, most likely in terms of her health. I am her OPW (Only Person in the World). This applies even though I live with others. Some people “have it” and some people just don’t in terms of empathy for their feline buddies. I am very intuitive, maternal with my cat. Quite frankly, the feeling is mutual.

My cat makes up for deficits in my human relationships. I don’t mean this in a bad way. I just thank God for my cat. She literally has an impact on my mental and physical health, and I believe it is true for her as well.

My boy Harry is like a mobile clock. You can tell the time is by his routine. Is never off more than 15 mins either way. Best alarm clock, except when want to turn him off.

Routines, and I like to use the term rituals, are very much a part of my interaction with my 7 year old cat Bubbles. She is always waiting for the “greeting” ritual and it’s always in the same spot in the den. We have a morning ritual as I get ready for the day which includes a water session in the bathroom sink. They truly are creatures of routines. Good video

My cats definitely have a routine that aligns with mine...

My senior cat definitely adheres to a routine starting at the same time daily 5am he wakes me up. Now in the evening he's asking for play session and dinner so I'll get to it!

Loki has a daily routine when it comes to food: one can morning, noon, and night. He's a Maine Coon. He loves those small cans of Fancy Feast wet food. I've had him for six years and during that time he's gained only one pound. His vet has never said that he's overweight. He gets very demanding if this routine is changed for any reason. He yells at me as we walk to his feeding station: "Come on, mom, you're too slow!"

My cat has a routine, but, since I'm a shiftworker, he has adapted to changing things a bit when my schedule changes. I usually work just nights (11 PM to 7 AM), but occasionally that changes. He's learned that this doesn't mean that anything's wrong. If he had his way, I'd be home with him all the time. Well, for that matter, if I had my way, I'd be home all the time with him, but I'm not.

Dublin's been with me going on 14 years now, and in that time, there've been a lot of changes in my own routine due to changing jobs, and, while it's not ideal for Dublin nor for me, really, he's adjusted. There have been times when he's been a bit stressed out about it, and I've done all that I can each time to make the transitions to each change as smooth as possible for him, and he's taken his cues from me. I remain as calm as possible, and I've always kept the same routine when I leave home and when I return. I think that's been a huge help, as has doing the same things that I always do when I'm at home.

While cats can adjust to new routines and changes, which are always big to a cat, which the narrator of this video has said, they can and usually do adjust, especially if we hoomins give them plenty of reassurance and remain as calm as possible, as well as keeping as much of our routines as we possibly can during each change.

I adopted a pair of kittens back when I had a 10 year old dog. They decided he was their mom and followed him everywhere—drove him crazy. Unbeknownst to me, he kept them from misbehaving. After he passed 2 years later, they shredded the whole house, and killed off almost 30 plants!

When my orange Tabby, Mokie Joe, was 10, we lost him to cancer. It was devastating to his black and white brother, Maui, and me. About 15 months later, we downsized from a house to a condo. He was a real trooper about all the changes to our lives. But, he decided to blame all the changes on one of my friends who helped me move. We moved 8 months ago and he still hisses whenever he sees her.

We’re trying to build new daily schedule, but my health issues aren’t making it any easier for him. We had to hide his favorite/tallest cat tree while selling the house. He was thrilled when it was unpacked in my new bedroom.

He’s b en amazing throughout, but I want to build in more happiness, security, and comfort into his faith life for whatever time we have left. Can’t even find his brush!

Can you provide a positive example of daily senior cat living? We live on a floor where my balcony is at a top tree level right beside it. Starlings and crows, mostly. What do you suggest?

Up @ 7, stroll in backyard, stalk a few birds, back inside by 7:15, mark front entryway, brushing by 8:00, eat, watch human on zoom meeting, nap, up by 4:30 for evening stroll, watch human cook, eat, walk on leash, groom, play, sleep. ❤️

My 5 year old indoor/outdoor cat recently had his world turned upside down with the arrival of my 3 grandchildren and a puppy for four days. He headed for the bushes at the end of our driveway and would only be coaxed by me (at three a.m.!) to come and eat. He has recovered now that they have left, but a little more jumpy. It was difficult for all of us and a testament to his intelligence that he stuck it out. I love my grandkids but I’m not sure I could do this to him again.

I had to laugh when you talked about the brushing routine because my cat does the same thing!

I once had a cat while working a job that randomly changed hours. This meant that the time I would be home to feed the cat would change, often.
To avoid upsetting my cats routine, I never allowed the cat to develop a routine around feeding time. I made a point of never feeding the cat at the same times. For his whole life, starting as a kitten. So he never developed a time related routine around food. It worked, and the food-time changes never bothered him.

It is good to allow a cat to develop routines because they are comforting to the cat. But in areas when you can not avoid changes, preventing the cat from creating the routine may be better than breaking it often.

At the beginning of the year (2022), I had four cats. By the end of January, I lost one to illness. We had a really bonded female that just loved him. She started manifesting diseases while he was sick and by the time he passed, I think she had already decided she was going to leave us because it was just one problem after another. She was younger and used to be an outdoor cat like her mate. We were able to bring both of them in with the other three 18.5 year old sibling cats in their last years. Everyone got along well, but the older cats were not a substitute for her mate. About a month ago, she was diagnosed with kidney failure. After a week she decided to stop eating. Two of the 18 year old siblings also decided it was their time so I had to euthanize three cats over one weekend . The last remaining 18 year old kitty is beside herself. She had a routine with her siblings that lasted almost 19 years with little change to her routine. Now she wanders around in the middle of the night calling for them. She is the last cat left and doesn’t know what to do in a household with no other cats. Unfortunately I am no longer financially able to bring any new pets into the home. I expect out of grace she might let us get through the holidays with her presence and then she will decide to leave too.

I'm part of her routine. As she is part of mine. So much so that I am afraid of going on trips lasting more than a week. I don't want to leave her alone for any extended period of time.

Ohhh, hell yes, my cat knows that in the morning when I have coffee, she gets her wet food. If I don't get it right away, I am pestered until I get up and fix it. She's walk back and forth from the kitchen to my table, look at me and meows. But, i love it.

It's as important as making sure they have food and water and everything else those awesome little cats want and need.

My cat Jay used to over groom himself bald in some places because my work schedule was all over place. Doing days and nights. He was feeling overwhelm and anxious. Then I got regular routine shift and another cat to keep him company when I do not home. Ever since then he calm down, happier and more loving. Jay is a cat how loves routine.
