Martin Heidegger was an original and influential 20th century German existential philosopher whose seminal text, Being and Time, supplied many of the ideas later thinkers in existentialism would have to respond to.
Heidegger spent his entire life obsessed by one question, What is being? Being and Time is the beginning of an answer to this.

Culture is inauthentic in bypassing the ability to chose ones individualistic way of being in the world but necessary to start the journey in that it is a map of orientation essential for early development. It seems to me that Heidegger thought that the true philosopher could deviate from the map every now and then and be authentic in doing so once he had a good foundation .
