Hubert Dreyfus - Heidegger's Being and Time (Part 1)

Показать описание
One of the most important philosophical works of the twentieth century, Being and Time is both a systematization of the existential insights of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche and a radicalization of Husserl’s phenomenological account of intentionality. What results is an original interpretation of being-in-the-world that describes skill in a way that undermines the subject/object distinction, and, in so doing, offers a convincing account of the nature and limitations of philosophical and scientific theory. This account has important implications for all those disciplines that study human beings.

For whoever recorded these lectures, and posted the course materials on the internet archive (see description) Thank you. And for the re-post here on youtube, more thanks. Dreyfus demonstrates what it means to be engaged with his subject and his students. He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. What a guy!

Oof, 9 hours in this part alone. This is going to be a tough ride, but it'll be worth it. Thanks so much for this channel.

Four hours in. Really amazed at how humble Dreyfus was--he seemed like a prof. who was truly curious about philosophical ideas. And the way he breaks down Heidegger is better than anyone I have come across. Things are starting to click now.

Hearing the campanile performance in the background mid-day through each of these lectures takes me right back to the campus and my time at Berkeley. What a fantastic treat. Thank you for whenever recorded this and to the poster.

Took me 11 months, but I got there!! Off to part two! This made me understand so much already about the world we live in and why society behaves like it does. Especially in my profession (psychologist), where we are failing to find deeper understanding of what it is being human through statistical analysis and conceptualisation.

Will use this as a supplement once my copy of Being and Time arrives.

When we’re being thematic, it seems impossible that we aren’t this self contained consciousness, capable of knowing, to a degree, the external world. But these lectures clearly and intelligently show that in order for us to manifest this being-present-at-hand of ones self, a more primordial and infinitely complex being-in-the-world has to already be. Even the way we ruminate inwardly is they way one would do so, given our founding in the culture with its history, we happen to exist in. There is no self that could fathom some indisputable inductive truth, or realise some superior ethical position, that would not depend on the founding of being-in-the-world. A different time, a different culture a different you.

I’ve got my own issues here and there with Dreyfus’ interpretation of both Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, however, it’s hard not to see that he was a really lovely guy. He has a certain softness to him. I’m strangely enough, far more sad at his passing than people who I actually knew.

John Dewey and Piaget are behind a good deal of Heidggar's philosophical perspective.

I simply needed to hear this. No wonder I conceived Being as a kind of ens summum like God because of a possible translation mistake.

Hot take: I don't think Heidegger is trying to distinguish Dasein from animal life much at this point in the book -- I think the "for-the-sake-of-which" in the early chapters is very Aristotelian in character, & could be interpreted as something we share with animals -- something like a primordial source of purpose. I'd say it's only later (with the introduction of the notion of authenticity) that the distinction between Dasein and animals comes more properly into focus. I'm hesitant to go along with the almost career-orineted picture offered here of the "for-the-sake-of-which." It surely does determine the self in a certain way, or one's "identity, " though in a much more basic way than it seems to be presented here. Either way, these lectures are fantastic; thanks to all involved for capturing and uploading these!

"zu Handen" usually means "meant to be handled by somebody who is entitled to do so".Or to be put something ore some issue i nto the hands of somebody for further treatment. The differentiation between "Erlebnis" and "Erfahrung" is very subtle. The former may much more refer to outer facts and the latter may refer more to inner experiences which remain in ones memory to deal with life.

Has anyone heard when, or if, within these lectures, Heidegger’s concept of the ‘insignificance’ of the world, as a result of ‘dread/anxiety’ is mentioned?
