Study Series: 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith
1689 22:7
As it is the law of nature that in general a proportion of time, by God’s appointment, be set apart for the worship of God, so by his Word, in a positive moral and perpetual commandment, binding all men, in all ages, he hath particularly appointed one day in seven for a sabbath to be kept holy unto him,1 which from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ was the last day of the week and from the resurrection of Christ was changed into the first day of the week, which is called the Lord’s day: and is to be continued to the end of the world as the Christian sabbath, the observation of the last day of the week being abolished.
- When the LORD's day is seriously observed, vital religion warm, if not, we see its decline.
- Such a duty as the worship of God requires a proportion of time.
- If God decreed HOW to worship Him, it is also his right to appoint WHEN to worship Him.
- the Sabbath command is universal, to keep a one day that is wholly unto Him.
- Gen 2:1-3 - God ceased on His particular of work of creation. If God rested, how could we not rest on His day?
- The Sabbath was made for man.
- Ex 16:22-30 - Its observance before the 10 commandments. "Remember..."
- It is positive, moral and perpetual.
- De 5:14-15 - It is a redemptive and covenantal significance in addition to creative purpose.
- The sabbath was never a harsh and legal imposition. It is written for our good. It is for our rest and for our benefit, our delight.
