Important to taste the shots too as depends on what beans you’re using. I’m using a lighter roast found my recipe of 17g in and 39g out in 22 seconds being an ideal brew

Learnt this at a coffee workshop I did recently. It really does make all of the difference. Btw, I notice you have the Sage/Breville machine. Would love some machine specific tips as I am struggling with my machine still! Thanks 😊

wow an actual good video holy shit. So tired of the bs on youtube. Anyways i’d personally recommend 17-18g because 19 it almost starts becoming too much for the basket depending on your size. cheers

Thank you for taking the time to explain this!

Notice this is just a standard guideline. This will change depending on your coffee beans, aswell as the temperature and pressure your machine works with. Light roasts usually render a better coffee with higher ratios, and darker roasts can render better with coarser settings and smaller ratios.

You also need to adjust the brew ratio based on taste. Sour vs bitter

This is the best video I’ve seen when it comes to dialing in your espresso. Thanks!

Mostly true but dialing in will vary depending on humidity and temperature of your home, it will vary depending on which coffee or how fresh your coffee is so not really an end all fix all technique. The grinder used in the example has a lot of retention so purging the grinds between trials will be a must. Assuming that the puck preparation is always spot on, it will work.

OCD kicking in watching beans bounce out of the hopper in the intro 😳 — who does he think he is? Brad Pitt in a Delonghi commercial?

I have that same Breville finder and a 6 grind for 18 seconds (or about 18 grams in) on that grinder has been the best ratio so far for my little Breville Bambino to handle a double shot.

The first thing is to use a different grinder. The machine is "ok"...but those grinders aren't.
Df64 comes to mind.

I think I needed this. But I guess I need to get a coffee scale… or a kitchen scale and use a stop watch. 😅

All these rules dont apply to all beans. You can go with different ratios, and time can go all the way to 50 secs with flow control. Something to keep in mind

When do you start the timer? When you press the button or when coffee hits the puck?

These tips depends not only depends on time, because I have got that 1:2 ratio and it taste like s.... I prefer to go 1:3 and it works flawless

On the Hario scale, if you turn on the scale with your portafilter on it you can have it to show the first decimal (X.X g) instead of non at all (X g). I don't know if it's reliable but you can try it!

Do you measure time starting when you hit brew button or when liquid start hitting the cup?

Taste matters most.
I have had 5g out of ultrafine light roast in 45s be the best espresso I have ever tasted. Far more than a typical 30s 1:2 or 1:2.5 shot of those beans.
