Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

fun fact he missed out a key part about why Algeria was colonised. Slavery.
for 400 years pirates operating out of the Barbary states would pillage and raid european settlements to take slaves to sell back in Africa. Initially the Europeans would just try and fight them and some religious orders were devoted to ransoming back christian slaves but eventually as Europe developed technologically they were able to fight back better. One of america's first wars was against the Barbary States (first and second barbary wars where the north african slave states tried to make American ships pay tributes/ransoms and america told them to go stuff themselves. They kept raiding until the Brits, the Dutch and the French each took turns bombing Algiers. but each time they promised to stop enslaving Europeans they would break their word and start almost immediately. So France stepped in captured the territory and put an end to that once and for all.

Not sure about how seriously to take cartoons like this which seem to detract from the seriousness of a topic. It is worth exploring how Algeria obtained its independence and how the French settlers there fought against it, especially the Organisation Armée Secrète, which included members of the armed forces and which undertook bombing campaigns in Algeria and Metropolitan France. It is well worth watching the Italian film The Battle of Algiers which shows how ruthless both the pro and anti independence forces were. As an aside, my parents first bought a TV in 1958 and my first memory of watching it is seeing De Gaulle making a speech from a balcony in Algeria.

Algeria held enormous symbolic value as it was thought to hold the key to France's future as a great power. A vast land with both mineral wealth and a suitable environment for large European settlements, speculated to hold the same potential as America's westward expansion. France had high, unrealistically high hopes to recover from WW2 through the development of the country and this made the obvious outcome all the more painful.

Throughout the 50s French politics largely divided on whether its revival as a great power ought to be achieved by pursuing European unity or by assimilating its remaining colonies. Both options were seriously considered but the Fourth Republic was chronically unable to make a choice. As a result the 'Western European Union' plan was shot down by the French parliament, a setback European federalists never got back from, whereas the hyped 'French Union' plan to reorganize the empire on democratic terms had the deliberate flaw of keeping non-Europeans away from equal representation.

If you want to expand on that, here is a great video that delves deeper into the French conquest of Algeria

France commited horrific war crimes in Algieria, only 20 years of so after being victims to nazi war crimes themselves. So much for civilizing mission.

The Muslim Algerian didn't get the same rights because they refused to submit to republic law over religious law but it was proposed to them as it was for the Jewish
