Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), decided to sever its ties with the BJP and quit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). While announcing the decision, AIADMK highlighted that the BJP had been making 'unnecessary remarks' about AIADMK's former leaders.

However, the decision seemed to be a culmination of long-standing differences between the two parties, which were amplified by discord with BJP state chief K Annamalai and other factors.
