Been building a workbench and just found out my square wasn’t square. Almost done now so I’ll just have to live with it

The “off” thing here is using a square held together by screws… rather than a fixed and/or pinned blade.

The midpoint of the gap between the ends of those two lines is your 90° set point. This is the same method one uses to make sure one’s plastic drafting triangles are square.

Good gravy! That's quite a knock out of square

Just simple, obvious geometry that sometimes isn't that obvious. Great, quality tip.

Good reminder to check all your squares and levels before and during projects. It only takes a few seconds but the savings are immeasurable.

I will use my Legos if i need a square made from multiple pieces

So a quick way to give yourself a reference edge is to draw a 3, 4, 5 triangle 3(insert unit here) along, 4 across your wood and check for 5 between the 2 end points. If drawn accurately you will have a square edge you can then use to calibrate your tool to as a starting point and then fine tune with the videos method

Good little video that buddy...I went mental once after using a "brand new" 3ft spirit level to put in floating ceiling beams and the level was off!!! When stepped back and looked down the room the fckn beams were all over the place!! 🤣...felt like crying!

Yeah, I flubbed up a few jobs in the past due to tools being out of square. Great idea to check before diving in with valuable material.

My 6” and 12” Starretts are basically extensions of my arm. I use this test at the beginning of every project just to make sure everything’s nice and square.

Must have been a serious fall to knock that square out that much…. Not sure I think Bridge City stuff is up to daily use. Looks cool but….

My Bridge City is also the ONLY one that has gone out of square 🤔

There's lots of tricks you can do with geometry to get a perfect square.

Most simple one: Take a piece of paper and fold it in half, twice, to get a quarter. Use the corner that's composed of folded edges.

Can always use 3-4-5 rule with just 3 measurements. Draw a 3" line, then draw a 4" line as close to perpendicular to an end of the 3" line. Then complete the triangle with a 5" line. If its off, readjust your corner as it might be off of square. Once you get it to exactly 3", 4", and 5", that corner will be a perfect 90!

Yep figured this out a few years back with a chop saw that was a touch off.

How did you not notice that it’s shockingly out of whack 😂

The only out-of-square tool I bought came from a hardware store. Now I get tools from woodworking stores, and I check them for accuracy.

If you don't have a nice jointed piece of wood you can use a factory edge on a pretty much any sheet good. I've even used computer paper very carefully before 😂
