As a native South Floridian for 18 years, the drive from Miami to Key West is really not bad at all. It always takes me around three hours but the drive is so worth it, and you can visit things along the way, especially in Key Largo. Get your key lime pie on the way, or stop at some of the parks

A big part of enjoying the Keys is the drive down from Miami. There’s 45 islands connected by 44 bridges. The longest bridge is 7 miles long. There’s plenty of party spots and restaurants all the way down.

Another don’t if you are driving: don’t speed, especially around Big Pine Key due to the endangered and protected Key Deer. There are cops all down US 1.

I was born and raised in Key West and this is a great video! Thank you so much for keeping the spirit of Key West alive!!

Been there many times.
Two things: The sunrise was MUCH more spectacular than the sunset.
Many other keys between Miami are worth the trip.
Good report!

Tip: there's a ferry that sails from the mainland to Key West. It might be a lot easier and (cheaper) to fly to the mainland, then just catch the ferry. Once you're in Key West, you can just bike or walk most places, no need to worry about renting a car or anything.

I live in the Keys, so I have some advice.

-Don’t take your eyes off the road! When you drive the overseas highway, don’t let the views entrance you, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it. Our highway is literally the most deadly stretch of road per mile in the United States due to distracted driving.

-Don’t be reckless on the water! Lately following the pandemic, I’ve seen way too many people act like jack*sses on the water and endanger their lives and divers. I’ve seen way too many jet skis tear though ft deep water and nearly kill swimmers in the water. If you see a red flag with a white stripe, that’s a dive flag, give a wide berth around that boat in the water as there are swimmers/divers.

-Do take a walk in Key West at the crack of dawn. Just take basic situational awareness and you’ll get a much less crowded walking experience.

-Do always check the weather. Way too many people get caught in storms which were forecasted for hours ago. Check key west NWS when you plan your day, a lot of weather apps think we’re in the ocean and give inaccurate weather.

-Do get your gas in Key Largo or Marathon. Other islands absolutely tax on their prices, especially key west.

I lived in Key West for 20 years. from 2000 to 2020. my husband and I are wisconsinites. I would suggest buying some books about Key West history because it is phenomenal. and since not much has changed you can really feel the history. we had to move to Florida mainland because hurricane Insurance became so expensive. also we are both in our seventies now and Healthcare is a bit more difficult in Key West. I will always be madly in love with Key West Florida

I always rented a car in Jacksonville, then take my time driving down to Key West stopping along the way. More to Florida then just Key West. Then when I arrive I park the rental and rent a scooter to get around on. My usual stay is 2 weeks total.
I take AmTrak across country from Los Angeles to Jacksonville Florida. Very relaxing vacation.

It does pay to get up with the sunrise in Key west. My wife and I were there in March. We are early risers. We were up at 5 everyday and realized that the island didn't wake up until 9. We would watch the sun come up. Then go get some coffee at Cuban coffee queen and walk around and hit the main tours stops. We were the only ones at the SMP, mile zero, and little White House. We got great pics and would be first in line to get into Blue heaven for breakfast.

My son was born there, while my husband and I were stationed there. We try to go back as often as we can. My son loves that he’s a native born Conch!

Here's a couple more dont's: 1) Don't plan on bringing a lot of bags with you if you fly into Key West Int'l - its short runway means that baggage weight has to be kept to a minimum. Also, don't think the Southernmost Point buoy is actually the southernmost point of even just the contiguous 48 states - it is just simply the southernmost point open to the public.

I just got back from Key West, and I one hundred percent agree with your list. Great job! I maybe would’ve added, don’t be in a rush to get anywhere. Scooters, golf carts, bicycles, and pedestrians EVERYWHERE

I don't travel much, but I've been to KW several times and my wife always declares, "Anytime you want to go to Key West again, I'll go!"

the ghosts and gravestones tour is really fun, it will take you around town and talk about a lot of the history of key west and will take you to the shipwreck museum too

Key West has changed a lot since I was there with the Navy in 1962.

You should also mention the great butterfly conservancy. It was my favorite attraction after the Hemingway house and cats.

I lived in Key West for almost 10 years and your don’ts are very good. I highly recommend the Conch Train (or trolly tour) and to try the Cuban food.
