Amogha-III

Amogha-III is new man portable third generation fire-and-forget Anti-Tank Guided Missile designed and developed by the in – house R&D Division of BDL. The missile has a range between 200 – 2500 m with top and direct attack capability. The missile features Tandem warhead which can penetrate through the 650 mm beyond Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA). The missile weighs between 15-16 kg.

The missile has smokeless, signature free, dual-thrust solid rocket motor with thrust vector control (TVC) and a dual mode – imaging infrared (IIR) and electro-optical (EO) – seeker assembly for terminal homing. The electro optical seeker used in Amogha-3 has been developed by Tonbo imaging.

AMOGHA 3 Seeker

The The EO-IR seeker used in Amogha 3 is being developed with the help of Tonbo imaging.

It features an ultra-light uncooled cooling system in the EO-IR seeker. This seeker will not require a cryogenic compressor to cool the image sensor which is going to reduce its cost by almost one third. This is a superior technology not available in most of 3rd generation ATGM.

AMOGHA 3 Powered by Artificial Intelligence

AMOGHA 3 will have the artificial intelligence to further improve its accuracy. It will have inbuilt libraries of infrared images of military targets. These images are used for training the algorithm to correctly categorize, classify and identify various military targets.

The missile also has capability to identify the target and identify its weak spot. For example, we all know that modern day battle tanks are weak from top. The missile has ability to change its course and re-orient itself to the weak spot of the target automatically.

AMOGHA 3 CLU

Tonbo Imaging will also be providing the command launcher unit or CLU for the anti-tank guided missile. CLU controls and launches the missile and engages with the target before launch. The target is initially acquired by the CLU. The target picture is then fed into the missile seeker which also has AI capabilities to identify the target. CLU can send target information such as its pictures and coordinates to the seeker to engage before launch. Once the missile is launched, the EO-I/R seeker guides the missile to homes onto the target with precision in centi-meters. Once the missile has been fired, the gunner has no control over it and missile using its seeker and artificial intelligent algorithm identifies and destroys the target which makes it truly fire and forget missile. In terminal stage, the CLU can receive the video stream from seeker to show the target in real time. This allows even the manual and wireless interaction & control between CLU and Seeker.

The EO-I/R sensor, video processor, Artificial Intelligence ensures that the missiles never loose lock on its target even if the target is mobile.

Development update

On 26th March ’23, the Bharat Dynamics Ltd has carried out successful field firing of Amogha – III and all the mission objectives were achieved.

As per the CEO of Tonbo Imaging, the procurement plan is for 2,300 pieces initially, once the company has demonstrated its capability. The total requirement is a few thousand every year because India is lagging behind in this capability.
