Konkurs-M ATGM

Konkurs-M is a 2nd Generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile designed to destroy armored vehicles equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour, light armored vehicles, fortifications and engineered structures in day or night. It is being manufactured by BDL under the license agreement with the Russian OEM.

The missile can be launched either from BMP-II tank or from ground based launcher. The missile can also be integrated with APCs such as Tata-DRDO WhaP or FICVs. The missile has a range between 75m to 4000m with a flight time of 19 seconds and weighs around 16.5 kg. The missile is capable of piercing an armour behind ERA with thickness between 750-800mm. It uses tandem HEAT warhead with extended explosive probe. Due to its launcher design, the system can be installed on a variety of wheeled and tracked platforms.

Due to their low cost, they can be used and produced in very large numbers. In February 2022, Indian Army has inked a deal with BDL worth Rs 3,132.82 crores for the manufacturing and supply of KonKurs-M anti-tank guided missiles.

Konkurs-M with Sarisa

The Indian Army is rapidly upgrading it’s KONKURS ATGMs for Night Engagement by integrating it with Sarisa developed by Tonbo Imaging – a Bangalore-based firm. The Integration of Sarisa is a game changer for Indian army as it has enhanced the night operational range of missile from few hundred meters to more than 3 km.

Sarisa is a CLIPON thermal imager based on longwave Infrared (LWIR) designed for Konkurs Launcher. It enables lock on to a stationary / moving target with the missile before launch. Operating in LWIR spectral range it has a state-of-the-art high performance cooled thermal imaging camera for detection, recognition, and identification of threats at long ranges during day-night and adverse weather conditions. It is supplied with special mounting brackets enabling mounting in front of the optics channel of the Konkurs ATGM launcher.

It is deployed in CLIPON configuration with special inbuilt collimated optics, enabling user to engage with the targets using the same sight channel of direct view optics of Konkurs launcher. The special collimated optics does not require any zeroing to be performed by the user before launch, improving operational performance. Its ergonomically designed with absorbers around the housing to help protect it during operation, there is also an absorber as a face shield that protects the gunner’s face during missile launch.

Good development. I hope the private companies like Tonbo get more orders. I wish I had tried to get into this company. I have worked in image processing and that company mostly recruites from my university.

I would much rather see mass induction of DRDO Manpad, which has top attack and a range of 4km. Vayu Sena is better off just replacing its entire stock of obsolete 2nd gen ATGMs than any kind of upgrade. Placing orders in tens of thousands for Manpads that are capable of inflicting the same damage as the mighty javelin is a much better use of cash.
