Malaria is a life-threatening disease. Malaria is especially dangerous for young children, the elderly and pregnant women. More than 90% of malaria disease cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Symptoms usually begin 10-15 days after infection. They can include fever, shivering, headache, chills, joint pain and fatigue. Sometimes the patient will also suffer from vomiting and diarrhea. Malaria is caused by parasites which are transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitos. This mosquito usually feeds at night. They are most active during the rainy season. Sleeping under a specially treated mosquito net offers the best protection.
