Histograms for Images - Understanding Bit Depth

I explain here, using Matlab, how to understand what a histogram for an image means, and further delving into bit depths in images. I look at importing and analyzing two images rendered in Blender, of the same scene, one with 8-bit color, another with 16-bit color. The dynamic range of 16-bit is so much larger.
