Chances for CERN’s Mega-Collider are Sinking

CERN is turning 70 this month. A good occasion to look at their plans for building a particle collider even bigger than the Large Hadron Colider, the "Future Circular Collider" (FCC). It's not going all that well, but at least we now have a budget estimate for the first phase.

"Ranting in a pink shirt" a thankless job but someone gotta do it, Thanks!

This seems like the classic government contracting boondoggle in which phase 1 will face innumerable delays and budget overruns and will uncover no new physics, then phase 2 will be touted as where the real results will emerge.

Hi Sabine, I am a scientist specializing in physiology and neurophysiology and I just did an experiment in the International Space Station. I identify with many of the issues you've discussed. We face similar challenges regarding scientific integrity, and it can be extremely frustrating to point out problems with research questions, hypotheses, or methodologies that are simply incorrect or unfounded. I've come to realize that, unfortunately, some individuals who hold positions of power in science should never have been there in the first place. It's disheartening to witness the state of affairs at times. The most frustrating part is that when we attempt to bring logic and reason into the discussion, we are often seen as the difficult or "annoying" ones. Your channel is not only excellent but also incredibly important for raising awareness about these critical issues in science. Thank you for your work, and I wish you all the best!

"no."
That's a word which, once you're at a certain level, you're not used to hearing anymore. CERN needs to relearn to hear that word, that much seems obvious to me.

I just found this channel about two hours ago and have been watching a few videos. I never thought I would be able to understand a lot of this stuff. It is quite interesting and the content creator does a good job of communicating the message to someone without a physics background.

Now that you’re on YouTube you are much more loved.

NYT should be ashamed of themselves tbh.

When I see CERN in the title, I know someone is getting a Sabine Reality Talk they will not like! Thank you for your clear honest and concise discussions.

You've done everything right, all that is already reported accurately in "Lost in Math". I personally think the particle physicist 's chances are worse than fifty/fifty.

You call it an anti-career, but I wouldn't be reading you in the NYT, so I'm happy to have you here 😃👍

What "new" particles are missing from the Standard Model? Super-symmetry? Sabine your impact on particle physics is far larger than you suspect. Your "pink shirt" rant is spot-on. The FCC is simply a jobs program, not a science program.

Sabine you are the definition of integrity. I’m full of admiration for how you stand your ground. 💗

Just like they hold a presidential debate, let there be a physics/math paper debate where the scientists show their theories and depending on the logicality of the papers, let the decision to build a bigger particle collider proceed.
It's not about the number of papers that count as vote/concensus, but the depth of math and observations in the paper that counts. That will be more economical than blindly building a bigger collider and then finding out "oh we did this for nnothing and lost billion dollars, should've done think before ink and not rush into it blindly".

Thanks Sabine

Cancellation of the SuperConducting SuperCollider in the US did not have the ill effects predicted by the supporters, and folks just moved on. Good to hear you cautioning about yet another super collider. Choosing which problems get resources is the most important scientific decision, and best opportunities may lie elsewhere.

I work in the NHS, we’re used to people with no science background at all making all the big decisions 🤨, in particular politicians
I’ve got 2 science degrees & a 30yr career at the top of my profession, I’ve literally never been asked for any thoughts of how the NHS runs. 🙄

As a UK taxpayer, I thank you for taking the time to push back on the seemingly endless waste

A decent proposal.*the new particle will be named the KING particle*

Kudos for the British civil servant who got you on the panel - someone did their job right

As a physicist from a long time ago (1973) it seems to me that new and improved colliders seem to generate more questions than answers. I think it's FOMO. If we don't build something bigger then someone else might beat us to a vital discovery.

You fucking crack me up Sabine! 😂 My favorite pink shirt wearing physicist in the whole world. One may agree or disagree, but one can rely on your opinions being valid, educated and informed. Thank you for your work running this channel.
