Global News is granted rare access inside an examination centre for stolen vehicles in Montreal, run by Équité Association.

Hundreds of cars seized by officers are lined up in a gravel lot, awaiting a forensic examination.

Global's Carolyn Jarvis reports on the shifting trends in car thefts and why experts say the auto theft “crisis” is not over.

At this point, they should just assume EVERY vehicle leaving Canada is stolen and work from there.

We have a corrupt foreign interference, drug decriminalization, negligent government. The home break-ins and auto theft is what happens when corruption is not addressed

Problem Push to start vehicles only have one level of security . Would this problem if we went back to a steel key with an immobilizer . Is the government going to fix this by banning Push to start as this is the problem here . Go back to the older keys .

And if the owner wants their car back they have to pay the impound, towing fees and the forensic investigation not the theft, that how the government gets to make a little cash on your hardship.

4 points in rapidly worsening order:
1) First I learned that shipping containers are assigned high priority for inspection due to the high perceived chance of illegalities.😀
2) But 'high priority' still means only 1.3% of containers are inspected.🤨But wait!...
3) Then I found that this is for containers _arriving in Canada only._ 😮
4) Finally it was confirmed that containers leaving Canada are given _a far lower priority, _ and that the percentage inspected is a secret.😠

The primary focus should be on the root of the problem: Truedu's bail reform, which gives criminals a free pass to continue stealing even after being arrested and bailed multiple times.

So do people get a chance to recover their stolen vehicles? Or do they never see them again?
Tougher penalties for the criminals would be nice, but this is Canada so it’s a slap on the wrist

Two years ago my dad's good buddy of his who lives up near Port Elgin got his truck stolen out of Toronto at a hotel near the airport and he got a phone call brother-in-law saying they found your insurance on the side of the road when he was on the cruise and what they stole was his a 2022 Black Ford Raptor and he thinks it's over in Africa and young kids driving it around

In the US 1 Million cars stolen yearly.

US insurance went up 25% like Canada.

Manufacturers need to improve anti-theft capabilities greatly. EU has a program for this now.

I NEVER saw the point of the start/stop button/fob thing. An actual key worked just fine. I’m more old school. I like simpler things instead of all this fancy crap.

Bring back actual punishments for crimes like grand theft auto and you’ll see these crimes almost disappear soon.

Canada is ridiculously lenient on criminals. It also doesn’t help that our current government doesn’t care about Canadians either.
