Journey Feelin That Way Solo

Oldie but goodie. Schon is at his classic best here, very melodic and restrained....only playing what's really needed for the solo but not skimping on the emotion and power.

Arguably the best phrased solo in Rock history. He rarely gets away from the major and some minor pentatonic licks that he learned from his Clapton study, but his arranges them into a seamless flow of licks that fit together perfectly over the chords of the song. It is a simply amazing use of basic blues ideas played outside a 145 context and it sounds absolutely beautiful whether live or in the studio on the record. He has the most tasteful licks this side of Peter Frampton in the early to mid 70s and adapts blues ideas into his rock songs similar to David Gilmour making them sound much more sophisticated. He also bends like Steve Lukather who's solos on Toto songs such as The Line where his bends within the pentatonic scales are mind blowing. Listen to songs like Majestic and Daydream by Journey to hear more of Neal Schon in his prime not that he's not always great but journey went pop and the guitar solos became less soulful.

Neil did some absolutely amazing solos in his time and is proof that ripping up and down the fretboard is not needed. Its all about the feel.
