They could have kept 1 loco with the diesel engine and alternator & other loco with fitted with transformer panto and other controls. And when on diesel the diesel engine will power all motors at limited power and when at speed some motors will be disabled., When under electrified section the diesel will be switched off and panto raised and train will perform at full power.

I also got this idea. Both diesel and electric trains works on same principal, so instead creating new ones, replace diesel engines of wdg with inverters which will convert DC to 3 phase AC. Ready your wdg to electric, naye p kharcha kyun
