Two third class passengers testified of locked gates. It probably wasn't to the extend like in the movies. But there where gates locked. That's a fact.

Only 1/4 of the 3rd class passengers survived. This tells me they encountered difficulties of some sort, be it gates or something else.

Not locked below decks but many didn't know where to go, a lot.of them.stood on the poop deck awaiting I atructions. Most didn't know there was an emergency door on E deck that led right into the grand Staircase. Also many didn't speak or read English either so they didn't understand instructions from crew nor could read signs

As a titanic enthusiast of 14 years, this is 100% accurate. There were no gates in 3rd class, and they where not locked below. They where allowed to the boats in small groups prior to 1am, at about 1:40am when things became serious, stewards allowed the masses up to the boats, now knowing how dire the situation was. This short was very well explained.

I recently saw a documentary on the titanic on discovery plus and one of the accounts of a survivor says they were told to keep moving down the hall, and they were not allowed to move up in all normal gates

Titanic was the disaster which created many of the safety proceedures we see today. Along with having more than the required amount of lifeboats, in 1912 boat evacuation drills did not exist. There was no set method on how third class stewards were to get their passengers out. Some took the passengers up to the boat deck themselves so they wouldn't get lost while others took them to areas of the ship that could open outside, believing the lifeboats would be lowered to this point so these passengers would be boarded there. Without means of communication nor required drills, the staff were on their own with time not on their side.

The thing about tragedies like this is that when your in the third class and you have a very limited amount of time to get off the ship you have to remember where your going. The ship was obviously huge so if you didn't know your way around then you were kind of screwed. Similar to taking the correct stairwell on September 11th.

Truth is, none of us were there, so we can't say yes or no. The only thing to go by are the testimonies.

Well done for making a video on this as many people have false ideas about this subject just wondering have you done a video about the ship that was supposedly spotted by the Californian near the titanic that night?

It wasnt until well after an hour that the seriousness of the situation became apparent to everyone, including the crew and officers. For all that time everyone assumed the ship would stay afloat, which is why so many boats were launched less than half full. By the time it became obvious that the ship would founder most of the boats were already gone. Survival also depended heavily on which side of the ship you happened to stumble onto; the starboard side was controlled by Murdoch who was allowing a limited number of men onto boats, whereas on the port side Lightoller wasn't allowing ANY men onto boats. You had a much higher chance if surviving as a man if you made it to the starboard side. But of course the passengers didn't know this at the time.

My favourite scene in the movie is when Jack breaks down a gate

Great job on this channel, Raf! I’ve been studying the history of the Titanic since my childhood and know many of these facts, but I can’t help enjoying the way you compile those facts into short well-illustrated videos. Having seen over 20 of them now, must say I wouldn’t be even close to making anything as neat and accurate in such a short format. Wish resources like your channel were available back in the day when I was beginning my research!) Keep up the great work!

Check out the stories of the last living survivors of Titanic. A 3rd class mention he was not allow on a different class area. But maybe you can find out if the gates were locked

Hi! I had a video suggestion and wondered if you could do it as a video short or TikTok. Could you make a video about the guy who hit the propeller like if he was real or not, or, what happened to him. Thank you.

The fact that any spot was gated for any reason contributed to deaths.

So in a way they were systematically put in a position where it would be hard for them to get out if there was an emergency

I think from what I read there were gates that were closed and crew couldn’t open all of them so there were people trapped but it’s not like what you see in the movie where crew were just standing there refusing to open the gates. In reality, they were busy helping those closer to the lifeboats such as the first and second class get to a lifeboat that third class was kinda forgotten about.

they had gates to separate third class and to mark where they weren’t allowed to go……… but they weren’t trapping them?
Hm

So yes they could've had some of those doors closed? Whether it was to trap them or not doesnt matter.
