The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.

This, and much more, can be seen on this YouTube channel exclusively devoted to these true British originals.

Paul McCartney says he was stunned when he heard this for the first time. Later, he said that it's one of two songs that he wishes he had written.

One of my favourite songs from the 60s. Means so much more since I lost my wife to cancer.

This song always manages to transport me to a beautiful place. Something about the guitars and melody

The lyrics take on a whole new meaning, when you've lost the love of your life. R.I.P. kid..love you, miss you.

It was after this track came out that George Harrison decided to try his hand at the Sitar. In some ways the Kinks were ahead of the Beatles. Ray took pleasure ripping into Revolver when asked to review it, after John Lennon had been rude to them when the two bands were sharing a stage- many incidents between them.

Probably the most English sounding band ever.

The Kinks, the most "British" of all British bands.

I say this because there are many British bands and artists who have so much American influence that people confuse them with being American.

Richard Thompson - one of THE most influential UK guitarists - recorded a wonderful version of this song for his box set "1000 Years of Popular Song". The drone element was integral to Richard's guitar tone across is career and features very tastily (and tastefully) on his cover version. Listen & enjoy!

This song also concerns the death of his eldest sister, who bought Ray his first guitar when he was just 13 years old.

I’m more of a 70s/80s, kinks fan ala…misery and low budget etc. but this was Paul McCartney’s favorite song for a long time

Everyone here is wrong. This song may predate The Beatles, BUT George Harrison got the interest to use sitar while filming Help! In February to April of 1965 where he was introduced to it by Ravi Shankar, meaning this idea predated this song by months. Therefore, the idea to use the sitar in a Western pop song originated with Harrison and The Beatles. Furthermore, this song doesn't even feature a sitar, it's just a studio gimmick that mimics the sound of a sitar drone.

See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

She is gone,
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

She just went,
She just went,
Went across the river.

Now she's gone,
Now she's gone,
Wish that I'd gone with her.

She is gone,
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

She is gone and now there's no one else to take her place
She is gone and now there's no one else to love
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,

See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river

Great Kinks tune. Sounds inspired melody wise by 'Change is now' by The Byrds.

This song is not entirely indian as "Love you too" is. It has rock instruments in it.
