Hermes, back to the Sea (Part 2)

Ηταν 24 Ιουνίου όταν ο Manos Vorrisis μας ενημέρωσε οτι υπάρχει μια θαλάσσια χελώνα που "επιπλέει" σε παραλία της Σύρου. Βάση των μαρτυριών, η συμπεριφορά της θεωρήθηκε μη φυσιολογική και δώσαμε οδηγίες για την άμεση απομάκρυνση της από την θάλασσα και μεταφορά της στη Νάξο.
Μετά απο λίγες ώρες, παραλάβαμε μια νεαρή πράσινη θαλάσσια χελώνα (Chelonia mydas) μήκους 47 εκ. (καβούκι) και βάρους μόλις 6,6 κιλών σε ιδιαίτερα άσχημη κατάσταση, αφυδατωμένη, υποσιτισμένη και με εμφανές πρόβλημα στα μάτια.
Σε επικοινωνία με το "Αρχέλων" κρίθηκε ότι η μεταφορά της στην Γλυφάδα ήταν πολύ πιθανό να αποβεί μοιραία για την χελώνα και έτσι ξεκίνησε η προσπάθεια σωτηρίας του "Ερμή" στον σταθμό μάς.
Με την κατάλληλη φαρμακευτική αγωγή και διατροφική υποστήριξη, τα σοβαρά προβλήματα ξεπεράστηκαν και σε μια βδομάδα έδειξε τα πρώτα σημάδια βελτίωσης.
Έτσι ένα μήνα μετά 10,8 κιλά πλέον (από 6,6) υγιής, δυνατός, γεμάτος ενέργεια και με τα διακριτικά (tags) στα πτερύγια, επέστρεψε στο φυσικό του περιβάλλον.
Ίσως ζήσαμε την πιο συγκινητική στιγμή στην πορεία του συλλόγου και ευχαριστούμε ιδιαίτερα το ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ-Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece και τον κτηνίατρο Δημήτρη Ποσάντζη για τις πολύτιμες συμβουλές και την βοήθεια στην σωτηρία του Ερμή μας...

It was the 24th of June when Manos Vorrisis informed us that a sea turtle was floating at a beach on the island of Syros. Assessing witnesses' reports, the sea turtle's behaviour was judged unnatural and, after giving instructions, the creature was removed from the sea and transported to Naxos.
A few hours later, we received a young green turtle (Chelonia mydas) with carapace 47 cm in length and weight 6.6 kg. He was in a bad condition, dehydrated, malnourished, and had a serious infection in his eyes.
While in contact with "ARCHELON", it was mutually decided that his transportation to Glyfada would probably be fatal for his weak body, and this resulted to our efforts to save "Hermes".
With the appropriate medical treatment and nutritional support, his health overcame danger and showed signs of improvement within a week.
Today, one month later, Hermes is 10.8 kg heavy (from 6.6), healthy, strong and full of energy! He wears identification tags on his front flippers and the time has come that he returns back to his natural environment.
This might be the most touching moment of Naxos Wildlife Society's work, and we would like to give our sincerest thanks to ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ-Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece and the vet Dimitris Posatzis for ther valuable advice and help on saving our little Hermes.
