49.6 C is 121.28 F - the hottest Las Vegas has ever been is 117.31 F

That "Canada's Hot Spot" sign is now ashes.

Fact: Canada's heat record in Lytton was only 1 degree cooler than Australia's all time heat record of 50.6 degrees Celsius.

A day later and that heat literally facilitated burning up the town. Prayers for all those in Lytton who lost homes, their businesses, town and some lives too.

Almost every station in AB has now beaten the June all time highs, with Northern locations exceeding all time ever recorded highs. If this does not break down in SK, Yellow Grass may have revenge (not likely so far). But EMERSON, MB may be in play in a few days - recall 40.2 C a few weeks ago there.

That sign behind you is now legit. Yellow Grass is taking down their legitimate highway sign today - so sad

And then it burned to the ground… 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

And now Lytton is no more. Sorry for ur losses. 😪😪😪😪. Be safe BC. I know BC and Alberta hate each other, but I dont care about that, just be safe and God bless to u all. Thoughts and prayers to all.

You've actually smashed the all.time temperature record for... LAS VEGAS. By almost 3 degrees F .

And Vegas is 500-800 miles south in the middle of a desert.

Lytton was also the hottest place on earth during this heatwave.

FYI people, there is another "unofficial" weather station at SPENCES BRIDGE BC (like DINOSAUR PROVINCIAL PARK, AB). It has also been 47 C. at Spences Bridge in prior years. Likely they hit 50 C this week - we will see. We need more reporting stations.

Just imagining getting stuck on the road there bc the car overheated and noone's around to help... yowzer

SMASHED IS perfectly valid. Records are typically beat gradually over years by tenths of degrees. This is historic and now moving into AB

The "HAT" and Cypress Hills station often are the AB hot spots in summer. Others close to the border are Manyberries, Onefour, Milk River. This Jasper Warden Station thing is unimaginable at over 1000 meters elevation. They hit 39.8 C. yesterday and almost as hot the prior 2 days. Must be a record for the elevation - I will grind out some stats for you all tonight on that.

The thing about PHOENIX (I lived there for 6 months in 1988 including June ), June is the hottest month. It never gets below 85 - 90 F most nights in June - 30 days of severe punishment and the crickets won't let up either.

I drove through Lytton for the first time a few months ago and thought... this is BC? This looks like a blue Nevada. First time I drove through Osoyoos a decade ago, I was shocked we even had a desert or that it could possibly be that hot anywhere in Canada. We have a big country, I've barely seen 1% of it :p
What's interesting to know is that it takes more time and energy for the sun to heat up air that's moist. Since deserts have less water vapour (greenhouse gas) in the air, it gets hotter faster... Grand Canyon was interesting because it was scorching in the sun, but almost cold in the shade.

Remembering this is bittersweet. This is the town my parents named me after, I thought the record high was awesome, then a wildfire wiped out over half of the buildings and damaged a lot of the surviving ones. Finding out something like that happened to a town I was named after was heartbreaking, I cried for days. It was like a part of me died. I hope they try to restore the gutted but surviving buildings like they did in 1871 after the Chicago fire.

God it must seem strange to look back on that video now, calling it a very impressive heatwave. But it's not funny. I feel devastated and shocked. Sending love from Manchester UK. 🇨🇦🌹♥️

When I lived in Merritt in 68-71 it was super hot there, but Lytton or Lillooet were always the highest recorded temps!
