Hot crackfilling is one of the most crucial steps to proper asphalt maintenance. Unfortunately it is often neglected until the problem has become much worse and now requires patchwork, overlays, or full dig outs. The weather here in the northeast is brutal on asphalt surfaces. The constant back and forth of freeze/thaw cycles creates many potholes in a short amount time. What happens is a crack left untreated allows water to penetrate the asphalt which then freezes and expands pushing the asphalt up known as “heaving”. Then when the temperatures rise the water beneath the asphalt melts and leaves a hollow cavity beneath the pavement. Then motor vehicles come along and ride over that section and the asphalt has no choice but to break and give way. All of this could of been avoided if the crack had been treated with hot rubber which will keep the water out for an extended period of time. Crackfilling in the northeast can be done on a yearly basis and should at least be evaluated in the spring and again in the fall. #sealcoating #sealing #asphaltmaintenance
