Reading the comments really breaks my heart. My family hosted 2 French Students this summer and I went to France and stayed with a host family and I had such an amazing time the people were so sweet and nice. We still stay in touch, It was in general an amazing experience! I hope that both French and American citizens can learn to accept and appreciate one another:)

At Cap Ferret you are not alowed to set fire on the beach due to the proximity of the forest (Biggest one in Europe mostly pine trees) that is very flamable, specialy during the summer. And you can find marshmallows in almost any supermarket, the brand "chamallow" is the most famous.

I was once in paris with my fiancee and i can tell they were very respectful and nice to us. The only thing that make them so special is that they don't want to learn or speak english. I can understand that but man, we had a tough time cause although they understood what we were trying to say in english they answered in french. But it's their choice you can't blame them for speaking their mother tongue. ;) ps: wanda is joking. Joking about white people, black people, germans, italians and of course french people cause her wife is a frenchwoman and she's teasing. Never take comedians seriously ;)

I think that they got told to stop because at this period of the year in south of France the risk of fire is great, everything is dry so even cigarets near forest and such is not allowed, it's understanble they're often fires in there (in California too so you'd think californians would know)

I'm french and i think it was funny. We are not allowed to set fire on the beach in France because, 1 ) It's disgusting, i mean the next morning people will come to the beach and will have charcoal. And at some places the beaches are small. And it's against the law. 2 ) fire may start .. a fire... especially in the south. The grass is dry and with the wind they might catch the fire. People have to be careful.
I know many American citizens and they are wonderful people. We can't judge a whole country just because we had a bad experience with one person. Let's try to learn more about each other. ;)

In the south of France, the climate is very dry and there are huge risks of forest fires, that's why on many place you can't make fire, even on the beach because the wind can brings embers.

If you go to a foreign country, you have to respect their culture, traditions and rules. I have seen a lot of people (not just Americans) complaining about little things like that. Just remember to have an open mind, and enjoy the beautiful places every country has to offer.

When I visited France, we only came across a few rude people. But what country doesn't have rude people? I did know a little french (from my elementary school years) and brushed up on some phrases to help. Aside from that, we had a good time! FRANCE HAS THE BEST FOOD!!! :D

I'm french, and I wouldn't light a fire in a public space. It's a matter of respect for other people and nature. When I'm on a public space, I keep it clean.

Actually fire camps on the beach are prohibited in France, for obvious security and sanitary reasons. The loosiest 1000+ town's supermarket does have marshmallows (that are called chamallows since we mainly only have this one brand).
As for Gendarmes, they are a branch of the military, therefore always wear a uniform.
