Trigonometry (Sides) How To Calculate A Side Length Using SOHCAHTOA.

Trigonometry (finding a side length). Here you will be shown a short video on how to work out the missing side in a right angled triangle if you are given one other side and one angle inside the triangle.

Also, make sure that the question is a trig question and not a Pythagoras question. If the question is Pythagoras then you will need to know two of the sides and if the question is trigonometry then you need to know one side and one angle.

Next, label up your triangle. The longest side is the hypotenuse (H), the side opposite the angle you are finding is the opposite side (O) and the third side is the adjacent side (A).

Next, decide which trig formula to use. The formula to use is the one which contains the side you are given and the side you are finding.

Next, substitute the angle and side length into your chosen trig formula.

If the unknown side is on the numerator of the fraction then multiply the left hand side of the formula by the denominator of the fraction. If the unknown side is on the denominator of the fraction then swap the left hand side and denominator over, so that the numerator is being divided by sin(Angle), cos(Angle) or tan(angle).
