This AliExpress Laptop CPU Is An AWESOME Abomination

I bought a Laptop CPU that some Aliexpress wizard made to work in a desktop motherboard.

Play some Minecraft on the Dawid Does Minecraft server courtesy of our friends at Linode!
It works on Java version 1.19.3

The fact it actually worked so well is really surprising. I was waiting for all sorts of shenanigans and instead, got a video about a pretty impressive chip.

The fact the janky IHS actually worked pretty well at keeping the cpu cool is nothing short of witchcraft

Dawid started beating LTT at their own "how stupid can we get with random tech" game and I'm here for it

That's like half the price of the 13900k and whatever horrors they did to it is somehow letting it draw more power. With even better cooling you might get almost desktop performance! Awesome video.

I have one of these, running it at the moment. I bought it without the IHS though, running on a tiny air cooler in an itx case. I'm happy someone has made a video on it, this seller deserves more attention.
I should also say that you need to change the clock speed limits in bios if you want to get more out of the cpu. It runs at 4.8Ghz single core out of the box, but mine can go up to 5.8Ghz and 5.4Ghz all core. Though I don't run it that fast because of thermal constraints.
Edit: After reading some of the other comments I think people are misled by Dawid's results because he didn't do any OC. I can get >13, 000 on cinebench r20 under 250W, in fact, my highest score was 14, 013. In my case this is on DDR4-4000 C18 memory, so with some mild tuning this can easily match a stock 13900K.

i remember using laptop chips back in the athlon xp days. they were typically higher binned to run at lower voltages so if you put them in a desktop with real power and cooling they overclocked like absolute monsters. Stuff was fun back then 😄

These chips take a bit more work. You must manually dial in voltages, the defaults are very high, causing thermal throttling. Tuned though, they perform on par with the desktop equivalent.

During the pandemic, I was buying up $80 (or sometimes less) QTJ2 engineering samples. They were basically 10th gen mobile CPUs on an older process node. You could then run 10th gen CPUs equivalent to an i5 10400 in an H110 or Z170 (if you wanted to OC a higher end chip). Very, very cheap budget builds and I usually chose the bare die ones though.

That is wild! Thanks for making a video on this, I LOVE weird aliexpress stuff! Their ES motherboards with cpus are interesting as well.

Hot tip. Leave a cpu in the socket when working on it. Edit: When swapping frames on the motherboard to protect the socket lol.

5:00 is anyone else screaming ''Put a CPU in the socket!!''
It would remove a lot of the danger here Dawid! 😂😂

Exactly the type of videos which I love to see from Dawid!!

Dawid, I would like to congratulate you on your successful delidding of an S-Tier janky CPU by means of an S-Tier janky delidding process. This is what YouTube was meant for.

"I went from never have to remove the CPU bracket to doing it 7 times" got a chuckle

The listing says that these CPUs are ES - engineering samples. That can mean that they will have variation between them and can have bugs and other problems that were fixed before retail release. Its quite a bit of money to pay for something that has no warranty and may not work correct, or fail suddenly and you are left with nothing.

Someone finally figured out how to save laptop cpu's without soldering them to a custom motherboard it's amazing and I am impressed.

Yeah these CPUs are incredible for the cost. I'm typing this on an 8 core 10th gen CPU in a Z170 ITX board I bought in 2017. It's crazy how much it revitalized my old system.

that front panel connector licking sound effect hella funny

Current gaming laptop chips do essenstially use undervolted desktopp chips and they are insanely strong. The only thing that keeps laptop peeformance low in practice is the lack of upgrades and nvidia shenanigans, maybe add a couple overheating models here and there

Memory speeds have zero and I really mean zero impact on cinebench, so higher clocked memory would have made no impact. Great video as always, thx for your hard work, love your channel!
