John compares how Duolingo and Bussu compare in terms of learning framework, lessons and language classes. He also talks about what types of drills and exercises both companies offer that span across reading, writing, speaking and listening. Thanks for watching this Busuu review and Duolingo review. I’ve been using Busuu for a couple months now and I have to agree that the community aspect is *very* helpful. However, the one criticism I have for it is that I’ll sometimes get an “It’s perfect!” review, then later on another review that picks something out that what wasn’t quite right.

I use both Busuu and Duolingo. I started with Busuu, and I was introduced to Duolingo by a former coworker. I have subscriptions to both of them for Japanese.

I love how you do the pros and cons for each app in your videos, always very evenhanded assessments.

I think you're right about choosing Busuu over Duolingo. I've noticed how some of the sentences seem a bit awkward in Duolingo. I do like the game-style lessons in Duolingo. The real video drills in Busuu are a nice feature though.

I think since Duolingo has discontinued the forums, Busuu really takes the cake in almost every regard.

Even though I've already started Rosetta Stone (based on several of your previous videos) I still love watching your video comparisons. Even past one's are pretty darn entertaining, not to mention educational. I've even spent time reading the detailed reviews on the website which really breakdown each program. Thanks for such a wonderful service.

I have used Duolongo for four months to revise and improve my French (B2 level). And a few weeks ago I started using Busuu to learn German as a complete beginner. I spent a week or two doing German on Duolingo but gave up. There are only so many times I can translate Hallo, Ja and Nein to English and back. The glacial pace was absurd. I also have issues with the French course. I lot of the English is very poor, and sometimes grammatically incorrect. Thus "The groom won’t come anymore" is just wrong. They probably meant "We now think the groom won’t come". And "Are you the oldest of your brothers" is nonsense. Sometimes you have to learn Duolingoese. Thus you can’t say "I cannot get to sleep", you have to say "I cannot fall asleep". I have only ever heard the first phrase. Then there are phrases such as "The hotel sheets were too dirty" suggesting that dirty sheets are fine as long as they are not too dirty. And we have lots of weird phrases like "There is a duck in the sink" and "The boss never travels without his penguin". Often I get lessons wrong, and I cannot figure out why. I later find out that there was a piece of grammar that I did not know. Hey thanks for not telling me Duo! Sometimes I just do not understand the English as it is too weird or just wrong, For example they say "Plates, glasses, cups and bowls are examples of dishes". No they are not Duo! They translate "Ils ont du mal à comprendre" as "They are confused" which is wrong. And they translate "I am travelling to the eastern US" as "Je voyage dans l’Est des États Unis" which is wrong, the French phrase means "I am travelling IN the eastern US". The poor standard of English makes me worry about the French. The poor translations confuse me. I’ve asked native French speakers to help and they told me the Duo French is sometimes a bit clunky, or mistranslated. Another issue is the wokeness. Duo is über woke and I hate that. I do not want someone to preach their religion to me. Lastly the leagues and points are dreadful. They encourage you to do lessons too fast to get more points. I like to think about lessons, practice variations, and make sure it sinks in. I do like Busuu, it seems more professional, no computer generated voices and lots of grammar lessons. I am not sure it exercises the language learnt enough, Duo is strong on that front.

I like the style of duolingo, but busuu seems like it has a more complete course for getting to the next level

Great comparison. The features that got my attention are the listening practice from busuu due to their videos.

I use Duolingo, but Busuu seems more comprehensive

Nice video but a bit dated. Duo canned their forums and started charging $$ for the live events. Without the forums, the grammar (at least in German) is a real bear.

I was confused about this, thanks for the video.

Another thing I like about buusu is it told me it would take me 162 months to get from elementary to intermediate level using their program. I found this to be very helpful in setting a realistic goal and knowing what to expect in my learning journey. No other program spelled it out for me like that.

I am using paid versions of both - and do lessons every day in both. I don't agree with verdict. Some aspect are indeed more attractive in Busuu - but in general Duo teaches much more than Busuu course, and much more repetitions to have everything really learned, not only watched once or twice.
