One of the Devs said something along the lines of "they are not clones, each diver is their own person with their own family at home thinking they are a hero with no idea they are frozen and have a 2 minute life expectancy"

I figured it was obvious we’re just expendable troops. At the end of your training, you hop on in your ice box on ship filled with other iceboxes. Basically reloading your super destroyer with ammo.

If you think about it your armour and helmet is the set Helldiver uniform for your destroyer so that could explain that

It makes me sad that at least 5 recruits died jn training because I was playing with my key bindings

The game has a perfect satirical representation of how soliders are just cannon fodder in a larger war machine.
Helldivers have no actual names outside of the username they inherit because who they are individually does not matter to anyone. And when the bridge officer says things like "you are the greatest hero of our galaxy" you can tell that he would say that line to anyone who walks up to world map because it's a lie

The reason that the helldivers are frozen is because super earth never stopped recruiting since the last war 100 years ago. They have just been banking helldivers for 100 years.

The devs said that you are not the individual helldiver per se, but you are the ship itself. Just for game sake, you control the helldiver on the ground. You’re a ship that holds a contingent of divers within its hold, which is why in the initial screen you see a bunch of pods moving around before one opens up. Each holds a hell diver and is part of your ship reinforcement. As for the uniform, your loadout is what the loadout is for every hell diver on board. There’s no one hell diver per super destroyer. The moment you leave training the diver is cryogenically frozen. They are told they are the captain of the ship, even though there were predecessors to them, but they don’t know that, because in their eyes, the world went black and then opened. To the hell divers POV you just started deployment, even if you are a star admiral or not. The democracy officer is in charge of ensuring that lie stays true. The diver that you started in the tutorial has been long dead by now.

Fun fact: If you chose a random voice for your helldiver, that voice changes every time you die. It really gives off the impression that you’re playing a completely different person.

Each Helldiver is to do their part and make the next Diver's life as easy as possible.

In game they literally tell you that helldivers are kept in cryogenic sleep till they are needed

Them being in cryopods is probably how reinforcements are so effective and quick. Instead of them working the war table like the start of the mission, their cryopod might just straight up get put into a hellpod and shot down into the fray off rip

Another thing to note, and what i argued with a friend of mine
Remember, when customising your character, we only change the bulk of your characters armour, which can always be replicated, and the voice of our character could always just be a filter
And ultimately, when asked, to what end?
So that when Super Earth shows footage of your successful missions back home, they can edit the footage to make it look like a single soldier went and survived the whole mission flawlessly, or at least died only once if they didnt extract, but did so valiantly

Love when extraction is landing and you get shot down as reinforcement just to fly back up to the ship

It makes sense as the staff always say welcome to the destroyer every time as if it’s my first time

All the energy they would normally spend on food and other upkeep is spent on the energy for the cryo chambers instead.

This saves more resources for weapons, ships etc.
