This is probably the very first moment audiences who weren't familiar with the novel came to truly realize the power and evilness the ring possesses.

This is the single most effective jump scare I’ve ever seen in cinema. Literally the only one in the series, a series that doesn’t even remotely qualify as horror. Its narrative significance is unparalleled.

I remember the first time I saw this movie, it was on DVD, alone at night. I was starting to fall asleep because it was so late. This scared me so much that I was wide awake for the rest of the movie.

Everyone only talks about the jumpscare, but the strongest point in this this scene is Bilbo crying. I always cry with him.

How he goes from sweet old man to snarling monster and back again in all of one second makes Bilbo more terrifying than all the forces of Mordor.

Poor Bilbo
He became like Gollum for a split second
Terrifying and heartbreaking at the same time

From the book's description:
"When he had dressed, Frodo found that while he slept the Ring had been hung about his neck on a new chain, light but strong. Slowly he drew it out. Bilbo put out his hand. But Frodo quickly drew back the Ring. To his distress and amazement he found that he was no longer looking at Bilbo; a shadow seemed to have fallen between them, and through it he found himself eyeing a little wrinkled creature with a hungry face and bony groping hands. He felt a desire to strike him. The music and singing round them seemed to falter, and a silence fell. Bilbo looked quickly at Frodo’s face and passed his hand across his eyes. 'I understand now, ' he said. 'Put it away! I am sorry: sorry you have come in for this burden; sorry about everything...'"
A really effective way to visually display the corruption of the Ring since a movie doesn't have the luxury of narrating Frodo's perceptiveness.

The violin strings screaming along with him, then fading as his Hobbit nature (humanity) returns, then dipping again into melancholy as his regret deepens. I love how they mirror and enhance the terror and loss on the screen. Brilliant!

This scene so quickly went from scaring me to breaking my heart

Bilbo may not be Frodo’s father, but the way he apologizes and cries, it gives off major fatherly vibes

This scene scared me first time I seen it but now it makes me feel quite sad. It just shows the effects the ring had on bilbo over the years. It's chipped away at some part of him. The change in expression and then him cowering afterwards shows he's now a weak, old and damaged individual. It's tragic to some degree. Poor old Bilbo 😢

This movie has everything: wonderous adventures, epic battles, tender romance, and of course, jump scares!

While this is obviously the effect of the Ring on Bilbo, it’s also possibly the effect of the Ring on Frodo; it’s making him view Bilbo as a twisted creature who could potentially steal the Ring from him.

Awww poor Bilbo. Like some of the comments said, you can easily see how much it had affected him. To the point where he almost attacked Frodo and lost control of himself that it scared him and broke his heart.😢

a brief a glimpse of what Bilbo would've become if he'd kept the ring.

I agree. I was six years old when I saw Fellowship of the ring. And this frightened the heck out of me.

I jumped about 2 feet out of my chair when I saw this in the cinema. Bilbo’s face on the big screen really was something 😅

This scene is so heartbreaking, when Bilbo breaks down after that jumpscare, that is. When he collapses at 1:10, the anguish in his face, and the emotion in his voice when he says, 'I'm sorry for everything, ' that gets me every time, can't watch that part without crying too. What a great actor this guy is! It's so sad, cause Bilbo is actually a really sweet and well-mannered hobbit who clearly loves Frodo very much, and lashing out at him is something he would never even think of doing, but you can see Bilbo's shock himself at what just happened afterwards, and it broke his heart. It's only his long-term exposure to the ring that made him so vulnerable and hostile, poor Bilbo :( But, he did do better than what Gollum did, and let the ring go to Frodo, Gollum fought Frodo for it to the end!

My cousin and I watched this on repeat, got our faces real close to the tv. Scared us every single time and we'd laugh our faces off. 😂
