Unifi Controller Migration - Backup & Restore

In this short video, I go over the main points on how to migrate a Unifi Controller using the Backup and restore method. This method is used when migrating an entire controller installation and is especially useful if the controller has many "sites". I personally don't use this method very often as most migrations I take care of are only a single site.

This is the first video in my new "In a Nutshell" series. Let me know what you think in the comments. I'm going to try to keep these videos as close to a minute as possible so a lot of more detailed information is left out when compared with my other, full-length, tutorials.

This is so helpful! I was really afraid of doing this since I'm new to Ubiquiti Unifi and might mess it up, but I just followed these easy and fast steps, and I got it! Finally, after a long search, I figured it out! Thanks for your incredible help, mate!

So quick and useful. Appreciate it sir. 3 step process that did exactly what I needed. Everything moved quickly and painlessly. Migrated from a self-hosted Unifi Network application running on a Raspberry Pi to a Cloud Key Gen2 + so I could add the Protect app and have everything hosted in one OS. I was worried about the difference in software versions, but it worked fine. Went from 7.2.97 to 8.1.113 on the new console without issues. Thanks again for keeping it simple and to the point!

Thank you so much. To confirm, because I don't want to screw up. Going from a laptop to a raspberry pi 4 (always on and running Jellyfin). No problems expected. Toasty Answers, you are a boon of knowledge. Weekend project.
OK, so that was easy. Got it done in 30 minutes. Had to install the controller on the pi and then migrate over. So far, it looks like all is well. Much appreciated.

Thank you very much, I moved to new NAS controller, from my old laptop I just wanted to re-format, this was perfection. Only one AP and local user/password all worked a charm.

Wow. Usually content producers want longer videos. Slow it down Coach. 😄

Thank you for these very informative and easy instructions.
However I am unable to find the 'Advance' option after the backup is done.
I am using version 6.4.54.

I just want to add, as it was just yesterday: my cloud key gen2+ stopped working due to a HDD failure. I replaced it with a Samsung 870 SSD. I had a backup from some time ago, so I was prepared, luckily everything was there after the first boot with the SSD. I had no cloud backup. The SSD works like a charm. If you don't use the NVR or just use it lightly I really recommend this replacement. The controller now also runs much cooler (37°C vs. 55°C) as of roughly 24 hrs in use.
I don't like that they removed the backup schedule if you don't use the remote option for their cloud services, that really stinks.

0:48 Which IP address are we putting in here? I noticed it's not the same IP as your 'UAP-Pro.'
I have a USG-3P, so I was going to use that IP address.
New to this, thanks.

This should work when Migrating from a Gen1 Cloud Key to a Gen 2 Plus Cloud Key right?

What is the method you normally use? I'm going to move from self hosted to a Cloud Gateway Ultra soon.

Does this method work when the old controller is the hosted Unifi one and the new controller is self-hosted/local install?

I host my own controller. I do not have a cloud key (although I probably should but that's when I get to getting a UDM Pro). I run my controller on a FCOS host using Podman. Currently for my automated backups I pause the controller container, take my backup and then resume the controller container. Can you compare and contrast my approach with your approach? Is the controller backup feature version independent? If not, what are the details (especially when migrating to a significant controller upgrade)?
