The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross small SUV is set to shake up the segment. But is it any good?

With competitive pricing, hybrid powertrains and better space than you'd expect, Richard Berry says the new model hits the nail on the head - but why on Earth did it take Toyota so long to figure out this could be the sweet spot in the market?

The brand already has the C-HR, which is a bit too quirky for some and very tight in the back and boot. Then there's the Yaris Cross, which sits below the Corolla Cross and is going to be too small for some family car buyers. And then there's the all-conquering RAV4, which might be out of your price range, or just a bit too big.

That's where this model - the Corolla Cross - lines up the crosshairs and fires for success. It is considerably more practical and spacious than the Corolla hatchback, and offers better usability and the much desired ride height over the Corolla sedan.

According to Toyota website. Top of the line RAV4 Edge AWD with 2.5litre engine and sunroof - Driveaway $56, 098. Top of the line Corolla Cross Atmos AWD with 2.0litre engine and sunroof - Driveaway $53, 552. Smaller vehicle with less power, less towing capacity and a floor that does not lay flat. Bugger all difference in fuel economy. Why would you bother for such a small difference in price?

Toyota New Zealand charges $48K for the Limited version & $44k for the GXL version. The Corolla SX is $38k. Capped servicing is more expensive @ NZ$305. My 1st car is an Aqua 2013 brought in 2018, so will order a 2024 Cross or SX Corolla hatch next year. Cross versions arrive early in the year, hatch versions later in the year.

Turning radius 10.5m, compare that to the 12m turning radius of a Ioniq 5. This Corolla Cross car is nimble so easy to park! Ladies and Gents will also love the comfortable suspension... it's a very sensible car, it's great!

Get the GXL without the electric seats and without the sunroof (which doesn't open) which add a 142kg to the car! Plus you backside wont burn on leather seats.

I moved to Sydney from the States and bought a Hyundai Palisade last Ausgust. I'm selling it now....Why? Australian roads are too effing narrow, under ground parkings are the worst, they are only designed for teeny-tiny cars like this corolla. SMH.
