A subnet mask is a 32 bit value used for identifying the network and host component of an IP address. Subnet masks consists of consecutive ones, followed by consecutive zeroes.

Devices on the same network have the same network ID, and the host ID's are specific to each device. The network ID and host ID may be used to determine a device's location.

This content gives a detailed animation to describe the subnet masks and how it is used to extract the network and host part of an IP adddress.
