I used to do was a small metal rod. Heated up the end and gently, push it into the plastic to give bullet hole marks and on larger things like vehicles, downing to give more of the shell, hitting the side of the tank.

I decided to test this since I got like 5 of those same spongy thingies from my Alpharius kit and while it creates that illusion, ut seems that you can enhance it by basically dry brushing over the white ricochet markings with Abaddon Black and the same sponge. It creates a small smoky effect as if that ricochet left a burn mark as you'd expect bolters to leave.
