DOMINATING Gentoo Linux With a 32 Core Threadripper

I decided to test out my threadripper by compiling Gentoo on it, it was even faster than I thought it would be.

fear not the man who has installed 1000 distros, fear the man who has installed a distro 1000 times

Wow! What a HARDCORE spec, you really RAILED Gentoo with all those cores. Absolute MASSIVE LOADS of performance. I love watching these DOMINATION videos, Luke!

As a German Gentoo user all i can say is nice music choice for that BLITZCOMPILATION.

“The Linux kernel is super bloated.”
Ironic. He could save others from bloat, but not himself.

This brings back so many memories of sitting around waiting for DAYS on end to install my gentoo system back on slot 1 Pentium processors. Only to wipe it and install RedHat which would quickly get hacked. Then switch back to Gentoo and compile again for days.

This CPU is a dream, a very distant dream but still a dream

I never thought i'd hear my own voice in a song in a video from Mental Outlaw. I approve :D !

Still crazy to me the amount of ram these systems can support these days, 100+ Gb is just crazy when im still running 8Gb

Can’t think of a better prank than installing gentoo on a hardware level to a school computer.

buys 100% of cpu yet only wants to use less than 1% of cpu

I absolutely love the concept of Gentoo. It’s like someone got tired of computers being fast, so they came up with a way to artificially slow them down to a crawl. And people like it. Amazing…

This is so awesome! Btw, DON"T use a swap partition but a swapfile. Also because (U)EFI/GPT are better than BIOS/MBR (failsafe mechanism for example), it should be always be used instead, even if only in hybrid mode.

BTRFS on root works perfectly fine and offers many significant improvements and features compared to different filesystems. Always use BTRFS when possible or likely even better ZFS.

march=native is more optimized than just for cpu family architecture. It also optimizes for that particular cpu model when possible.

-j option should be cpu threads +1 for IO thread. Or so the used to say. I guess that it may be beneficial to have many more for all those extra IO capabilities of NVMe drives. It's worth a test.

You really should try to use the USE flags as much as possible, especially before the installation. This should save you compile times and improve performance and add additional features for programs that other distros don't have, like for example Ubuntu doesn't include PCRE search functionality into ripgrep, (but pcre2grep is a better option for that if you can compile it there lol).

Your capture card has a problem there @ 14:47 because this is a different type/mode of low level graphical interface which works differentlu than text mode AFAIR. But that doesn't mean that a capture card shouldn't support these lesser used modes.

With mirrorselect the search for fastest mirrors should be done rather than choosing manually. It only takes a few minutes max, yet it saves download time always.

@ 19:30. No, actually selecting nomultilib profile for thhe entire system means lesser compile times and is recommended unless you still need 32 bit libs for some reason.

it's times like 4:52 why there's zero regret watching a walk-through of something that may be already redundant for me.
supporting the channel with a listen through @ 1.75x, had to roll it back, chef's kiss 👌

"installing gentoo is not that hard"
Installing gentoo:

Advise: mount /var/tmp/portage as a tmpfs (if you can spare the RAM). This way, the whole compile process will be done in memory and only the install files are written to the hard drive (saves SSD cycles, too).

Thanks for the jumpscares with the loud music after the very quiet speaking, mate.

Gentoo was my fifth distro. I was still in highschool in the early 2000s when it came out. My dumb ass tried to install it on a Pentium 1 IBM with a 2 gigabyte hard drive.

I even had it overclocked to 133 MHz.

I remember having to physically swap hard drives so I could find out how to install the x window manager.

Threadripper, 128 gigs of ram, but a 5 year old video card. I feel that hahaha. I am not paying double MSRP for a new GPU.
