Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

a common equation is y = mx + b.
m represents the slope. B represents the y-intercept, where the lines touch the Y-axis. So y = 2x + 3 means that the y-intercept is 3. the 2x means that the slope is 2 over 1. (Look at rise over run)
This equation, y = 2x + 3 is a slope intercept equation, because it tells you the slope is 2 and the y-intercept is 3.
But for something more complex they call it standard form, for equations like 2y - 2x = 6 where you have to turn it into slope intercept form.
Graphing it is relatively easy. if you get a negative slope, you graph the line so its going downward and night rising like a positive slope. The y-intercept is just where the line passes through the y-axis, so a negative y-axis doesn't make the line negative.
When a question asks "Does y, x solve for..." and it gives two equations, simply put in the number it says and sees if it's right. It's just a regular equation. For example, "Does 1, 2 solve for y = 6x - 4?" You put in 1 for x and 2 for y. So you can rephrase the question to be "Does 1, 2 solve for 2 = 6 - 4?" and it does. However, if you input "2, 1" the input would result in "1 = 12 - 4" which isn't true.
For problems where the slope isn't said, just assume it is 1, or a perfect square. Example y = x - 4. The slope is 1 and the y-intercept is -4.

I hope this helps. I went through a bunch of information because learning it all together makes much more sense. The logic makes it all tie in together.

How will algebra help people in the future. Like I get it if you want to be an astrophysicist or a data analyst, but how will this help you if you want to become something like a lawyer or doctor.
