That surface finish looks like somebody took a random orbital sander to it.

40 year Ford Parts Man here. Remember when Fords commercial motto was. "Quality is Job One" ? Yeah , that went away quietly a long time ago unfortunately.

Respect this man’s ethics and moral values, whatever he touches is gonna come out top notch without a doubt

For those wondering, that device is a surface profilometer, it has a stylus much like a vinyl record player, and it measures the Ra (roughness average) which is important for proper sealing of a mating surface like a cylinder head.

I'm glad you're calling these manufacturers out And hopefully they start making better vehicles. Like they supposed to!!!

As a mechanic I hate having to "modify" new parts so they fit correctly.

“I can’t get quality parts anymore; that’s why you see millions of dollars worth of equipment.”
That line hits so hard!
It’s a shame that’s we’re the industry is leading too, less and less pride of work.
To the point where we’re telling ourselves; if you want something done right do it yourself.

When I first seen this guy my first impression was “this guy is cocky thinks he knows everything”. After seeing a bunch of his videos I ate my words. This man knows his stuff glad to see his success and him sharing his knowledge

I used to work for Caterpillar in Lafayette Large Engine and we had a whole department dedicated for remans. They carried the same warranty as a new engine and they took great care that the heads and blocks were perfect when they returned to the customer

I used to live near a Ford dealership that had a massive parts department. Good parts quality, I could get *everything* I needed and the prices were right. Those days are long gone.

It is hard to find people with your level of integrity, thank you for what you do to protect your customers..

Poor quality of parts was the biggest reason I closed my shop after 10 years of being open to the public. I’d buy only “good reliable” parts, & they would not even pass a visual inspection, then many times if they did pass a visual inspection, I’d move forward & do the repair, only for the parts to fail. Then I’d be left holding the bag & would warranty not only the defective part, but all the other parts involved like gaskets, oil, filter, my shop labor. Not to mention probably a tow, a not happy customer, & a rental car for the customer. All the way around a big loos of time & money for my shop. That meant I had to charge more to all the other customers.

I’m glad you are showing what you are finding.

I absolutely LOVE how Dave calls it as he sees it! He praises good work, and he calls bad work to task…Dave is simply amazing!

Same problem in every industry, the higher ups want to see growth and pressure employees to quickly produce products regardless of quality..

I dealt with this with Motorcraft ac compressors on a Lincoln town car. After replacing them 4 times within a year, I ended up with a used one from the junkyard. The junkyard compressor worked perfectly!

It’s a universal problem. The culture is different. Whenever you find good work being done, it’s the exception, not the rule.

Hey, I watched some videos about a shop in TN. he only repairs with parts he remans himself. He buys up cores from auctions, junk yards, craigslist, wherever, but never uses any reman but his own. I respect it.

Not many technicians talk about stuff like this. Thank you for letting us know.
