MongoDB - Back to Basics 1 - Introduction to NoSQL

In this first webinar of our back to basics series Joe Drumgoole, Director of Developer Advocacy EMEA at MongoDB, talked about:

- The background to NoSQL
- What has driven the demand for NoSQL databases
- What NoSQL different from more traditional SQL database

We also classified the four main types of NoSQL databases, specifically:

- Key value stores
- Wide-column databases
- Graph stores
- Document stores

Thanks a lot for the presentation. This is a very good tutorial for people who know other database system but wants to learn MongoDB. Joe Drumgoole is very knowledgeable in this area if you watched the Q&A session. The answers are on spot and highlight differences compared with other database technologies.

I watched this backwards - started from the 3rd video and I must say, this is astonishingly good - particularly the bit about how to structure your collections in different scenarios (video 3). One thing which is REALLY on my mind right now is that I've not heard a lot of this information before. I think that one of the problems with MongoDB is that it's really easy to get up and running and I dare say a lot of developers (like me!) never even knew this information before. I do wonder what % of MongoDB developers are actually aware of this information. Anyway, great video! Thanks.
