Freedom is the protection from arbitrariness. It is the protection from arbitrary attack by others, the preservation of life so that life can grow in love.

I don't believe freedom has anything to do with safety or hapynes. Freedom is beautiful. One recommended read on the subject: Brave New World.

When people talk about freedom, they mean freedom from arbitrary third party interference and arbitrary retribution/punishment, which is injustice. “Freedom” is the wrong word to use to describe the benefits and increased opportunities created by meeting societal definitions for success, purpose and responsibility, this is more akin to increased privileges, since it exceeds the natural human condition, that is poverty. Freedom means the ability to not just make good personal choices among “noble” responsibilities, but also to make irresponsible personal choices .. however distasteful they may be.

At any rate, JP’s definition of freedom is irrelevant because arbitrary law, regulation, policies, ect.. are wholly unethical and is the very definition of tyranny. One cannot use coercive law and violate consent as a means of setting others ‘free”, because it’s wicked, perverse, cruel and always wrong, regardless of good intentions. The road to hell is paved with “virtuous” do-gooders eager to relentlessly save you from yourself, and arbitrary law is their preferred weapon of abuse.
