The answer is surprisingly no it's not discrimination because the only law for age discrimination is to protect you once you are 40+.

If they’re only hiring boomers, they’re gonna have an awfully small worker pool. Most of them are retired or dead.

I know gen z people that are very hard working and respectable, and others that are complete jokes of human beings. Every generation has them, it's just easier to point fingers at the youngest

Worked with a girl who was always late, always called off because of her boyfriend, was over dramatic about him, and when she did work she was FaceTiming him.

I can't say he was controlling her, all I can say is that an unhealthy amount of her time and life revolved around him (edit to add: I say that because she seemed to thrive on the drama. She always brought it up in that annoyed but braggy way, and made sure we could hear her). She was either fired/let go or quit, idk she just wasn't there anymore one day.

We did have some good workers but management treated them poorly, customers did too, and the people who didn't want to work pushed their jobs on them.

"Only hiring baby boomers."
Do you think a 60-70 year old is going to bag your groceries for you to pay the minimum amount of money you are legally obligated to? Minimum wage on an employers end results in minimum effort and engagement in the work on the employees.

"Only hiring boomers cause they are used to working for minimum wage and standing on their feet all day, instead of younger people that actually realize that they are being taken advantage of by the retailer."

Baby boomers need a nurse to stand with them the entire shift

Employers love me early on for a couple months, but start to treat me the worst when they realize I just do my job and don't complain. I'm desperate and young, but I'm sick of being treated like a floor mat very blatantly for a fraction of what it takes to even have a car and apartment

My gf and I are Gen Z, and I can assure she's the hardest worker I've ever met. The reason she quit was because they were actually working her to death and were refusing her two weeks notice. Some kids want to work, but when they do, employers take advantage of them

Good luck to this manager finding enough employees over 60 to keep their business staffed.

HR person in California here. Although you'd usually never want to post a position with age requirements (unless it's 18+), it's only legally considered age discrimination if you are discriminating against people 40 and above.

We regularly discriminate against younger workers for not having experience even in entry level jobs (🙂) so no it's definitely not illegal or enforceable, but the legal system won't have to step in, because having to close your store because of how poorly you handled your employment situation, then proceeding to handle your employment situation even worse by eliminating your largest pool of new employees, and also letting your customers know that you're a shitty employer is a sure-fire way to lose your business.

There's a local BBQ restaurant in my friends' city that mostly hires highschoolers, and they put them on the food line and the order distribution (not cashiering), and those kids work like machines! They would verbally verify & hand out every order (this was during covid, takeout only), and the ones on the food line were side-by-side with the most experienced people, who gave constant order calls and guidance. It's because of dedicated, focused, constant training and really high standards for customer service that these kids do so well. I was amazed when I went in there. So there are always gems in every generation, and the ones with good heads on their shoulders can do anything they're tasked with, basically.

Pretty sure teenagers from all generations did this

Every generation has people who don't take work seriously. If you didn't notice them at 20, it's probably because you were that employee. The internet has created a drain on employees of all ages, mostly due to home/self employment and while I want employees, I can't really blame them. All a lack of people means for me is job security, you can't throw a rock in this town without hitting a help wanted sign.

I've gotten jobs as an elder millenial for this exact reason. Employers are sick of the flighty and fickle mindsets of the younger generations. Now, I'm not much better mind, but I'm not going to quit, I'm just going to slack off and bleed them for money until I find a better job or they fire me.
