The capacitors will last longer at a lower temperature. You can look up the graph with temperature and Lifetime at the manufacturer.

When engineering analog electronics and taking into account component values changing by temperature, you optimize for a certain operational temperature for lowest distortion. Still, generally speaking, the warmer it gets the more thermal noise there is and the faster components degrade (e.g. electrolytic capacitors).
Digital electronics sounds the same no matter temperature (within a safe temperature range).

The old term "warm up" comes from the days of valves in everything. Things didn't work until they had literally "warmed up".

In my younger days as an electric guitar player using a vacuum tube amplifier, I found that the tubes always sounded best right before a tube failed lol

1980's Technics amps had a "pre-heat" (Computer Drive) to bring the output transistors up to temperature and stable bias.

Hi Paul, I believe our ears also need time to adjust to music, it could be 5min to 15 min person-to-person.

I wonder if it's not the equipment warming up, but Paul's ears? Just like speakers becoming more flexible, Paul's eardrums gently warm and flex, and hear better. Just a thought 🙂

Interested in thoughts regarding leaving equipment on at nominal temperature 24/7. (Yes - ignoring GHG contribution in this instance).

Premise being that (old school) most damage is done to circuits etc as they heat up and cool down therefore circuits - capacitors etc will last longer if system always left ON…

Appreciate any views on this premise/hypothesis/lore.

Dezigners spec resistors to run at operating temporature. When cold the resistors in the circuits are not the same value as they are warm.
PS Audio may not do this as Paul has explained that it would be better for their equipment to be better closer to startup temporature.
Mabe Paul could clear this up in a future video.

im seeing 2 parts..the power supply side should be cold so it can sink the thermal energy thats lost in the step up and or step down process. But in the analog amp stages it tends to calm down and be happy..warm.. I never turn my audio off

It's been common in the past for equipment to be run for 24 hours after repair to ensure that it's functioning correctly before returning to the customer.

Yes, the bais reading are different at cold to normal operation temp.

Semiconductors used in aerospace applications are artificially aged through temperature cycling, the intent is to weed out infant mortality. For example; a module would be temperature cycled 15 times between -54 Deg. C and + 95 Deg. C, if it gets through the the temperature cycling it will be on the flat part of the bathtub shaped reliability curve and be good for 30 years or so. Other than that it's always best to keep the running temperature as near ambient (device operating parameters are specified at 25 Deg. C) as possible but heatsinks are among the more expensive parts of an amplifier.

I understand that class A amplifiers sounds better because of operating temperature, the transistor, like fet, are more linear in a higher temperature setting, am I wrong?

Everything should be written in the manual. For example I’ve got a vintage voltmeter and the manual says you can start measurements in 30 minutes after it’s turned on. Explaining why it so for 95% of equipment owners is impossible to understand correctly. Even the specialist sometimes do not fully understand the nature. Just simple like that.
