I guess this goes to show how late in development the game was before they changed the player character to look less like Little Mac. Makes the decision even more baffling in my opinion.

Something I find interesting that I don't think anyone commented on, is the original footage actually had a different voice call out for a tko. The japanese announcer clearly said tko on the protagonists third down, and just knockout for gabby's ko.

I remember taking an art stab at Mac's beta design for SPO, a few years ago. I may have to do more, after this.

Don’t know why they changed it. The effects sound way better than the final version and Mac looks to have more motion in his punches.

It would've been cool if this was a sequel, Mac would come out of retirement to fight the new generation of WVBA boxers, that would've been awesome.

I am here after the secret two player mode has been found after 28 years. What I am hoping for is that there is a beta code now on how to get this Little Mac

If I had to take a guess as to why to changed the character design, it could be something similar to how they made Doom Guy. At least from what I heard, they designed Doom Guy to resemble the average male in the USA (at least I think it was the average American). Punch-Out did better in the west, so I suspect that, along with making the game easier for wider audiences to play, they may have thought that designing a more western-looking Mac would be more appealing to the western market.

I could very well be wrong, but I feel that basically, they were trying to represent their main market in this version of Little Mac.
