I was diagnosed when I was 15, and during the months prior to that, I was lethargic, urinating very frequently (every 20 minutes), was extremely thirsty, weak, and I had lost a lot of weight. My Great Aunt noticed and told my Dad to take me in to the hospital. Luckily she had caught that, as my blood sugar was 878 when the the nurse checked it. She nearly panicked!

Important info, but adults also get Type 1 diabetes long after childhood. People can get autoimmune diabetes at any age -- a recent European study stated that 50% of new cases are diagnosed after the age of 30. But people are being told all over the world that they can't possibly have Type 1 "because that only happens to children." Not true at all.

My son died last June 8 of DKA, he was 10. I still can't believe how a silent killer is that sickness.

Hey thank you for posting this I've been type one for 13 years (I'm 18) and my mom realized I was type one cause she literally found a headline about it on a health magazine about t1d while grocery shopping and that's how she realized what symptoms were so it's nice for there to be an online equivalent to that :)

I am a type 1 diabetic, i was diagnosed when I started losing weight without any reason. I was taken to doctor where he did a couple of tests and he told us that I was a t1D. Since then i have been on insulin injections two times a day and have been monitoring sugars through blucon nightrider with freestyle sensor which keeps me updated every 5 minutes, so life is simple on that part

My daughter was diagnosed age 1 a few months ago. She was demanding drinks all the time and weeing a lot and had thrush too. It's so stressfull and scary; constantly worrying; it feels like it takes over your life, and not to mention when she starts school that's going to be so stressfull and worrying too. It makes you feel ill from worry because parents are nervous of leaving their children for the first time and letting what is essentially strangers look after your children but when they've got T1D they've literally got the responsibilty of keeping them alive in their hands which is going to make me a nervous wreck. It also isn't fair on the teahers either. I hope technology improves and makes it even easier for people with T1D in the future as I can't imagine what it was like before CGMs, pumps etc.

Wishing everyone, especailly those with T1D a long and healthy life!

i’m 17, and have been feeling extra tired along with dizzy whenever i stand up. i’ve also been having to pee about 4 times before i go to bed and during the night. Whenever i eat food i feel extremely hungry right after and my stomach even growls but i don’t have excessive thirst. i’ve just been worried mainly because i just never feel good and i haven’t had a day where i feel 100% recently anymore, and i’ve been really frustrated lately and forgetful. i’ve brought it up to my parents but no one takes me seriously so i don’t really know what to do, i can be overthinking it but idk

My primary doctor refused to look at my clucose monitor which I had been taking my sugar three times a day for 5 months because I was anorexic, as they said . But the numbers were really high and I nearly died because of there neglect if I haven't went to a different hospital I would have died . when I went it the new hospital they asked me what happened. I told them and that I had a meter they took it away and gave it to the doctor immediately and within an hour I was diagnosed type 1 . Almost lost my life because of the laziness of doctors . Please fight for yourself . They do care if you live or die

My son (8 years old) was diagnosed 23/06/21. He had ALL the signs, but we had absolutely no idea due to the lack of awareness. He was in DKA but thank goodness our dr was on the ball and we were sent straight to a and e. A week in hospital and we’re home trying to get into a new normal of finger pricks and multiple injections of insulin. It’s devastating but I feel incredibly lucky that he’s still with us, not all children will be as fortunate 😢
I hope in future there will be more awareness of type 1 in children, it could save lives

My 14 year old sister was sent to the hospital on an ambulance for a seizure and they later found out she had type 1 diabetes after the few months before showing symptoms and acting like she was fine when something was up. She has been in the hospital for a month and a week because of her psychosis which was also diagnosed and also that she unfortunately got corona virus so she is isolating at the hospital.

Yes 16 years ago my daughter was 18 months old when I noticed she was peeing and drinking a lot. This went on for a month or so. It had crossed my mind Diabetes but I shut that down because I didn’t know about type 1 diabetes and thought she was too young for that. Eventually my daughter looked like she had the flu, dry heaving and sleeping much of the day. A few days later noticed her breathing was labored and I took her to the hospital. Thank god I did and didn’t wait any longer at that point she was in a coma and in critical condition. Had I waited until the morning things would have turned very bad. I beat myself up over it and felt so guilty. She was in icu and after a day finally came out of it, she had some brain swelling and luckily she was ok in a few days. I really think type 1 diabetes should be brought to every new parents attention these days. Had the pediatrician given information in their packets or during the initial office visits regarding this, it would be something parents know can possibly happen and to look out for. It can be caught early in that case and not when things turn very critical. Over the years I joined some Facebook groups where I have learned of some situations that turned very bad for a few children. Again it’s the same story over and over again, the parent thought the child had the flu so they let it run it’s course until things start to get very bad and it’s not that at all. It really has to be taken seriously.

My son aged 12 has just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, so much of the video rings true all the warning signs were there looking back (the thirst, urinating more, losing weight etc).
My son's blood sugar level were over 40 and he was very very ill with DKA, at the time of writing this he's still in hospital but thankfully on the road to recover thanks to the amazing work of the NHS in the UK.

It can happen to anyone, we have no family history of type 1, please if you are watching please take note of the what is in this video
