If you want to jump into Schopenhauer, there's no need to become a Plato or Kant scholar. Schopenhauer, luckily has a very clear style. Still, we do have some recommendations. Hopefully this video was helpful, thanks a lot for the likes, subscribes and comments! They mean a lot.

I've just started getting familiar with his core ideas and wanted to have a deeper understanding of his philosophy but didn't know where to start, This video just couldn't have came in a better time, it is almost like you were listening to my thoughts lol.

Frankly speaking, you should start with Pererga and Paralipimena. The World as Will and Representation is a mamoot and it's about hard metaphysical and epistemological claims. If you read philosophy just because you want to improve your lifestyle, you should read PandP or Studies on Pessimism.

I wish these videos were around when I was reading World as Will and Representation. I have a good understanding of Kant and Plato, but you lay out his ideas so nicely. Well done. I’m currently reading On the Will in Nature and its interesting. Thank you for the videos.

How to read Schopenhauer?

Step 1: Just read him

Seriously though, his Essays and Aphorisms served as an introduction to Schopenhauer to me. And then two Fundamental Problems of Ethics. Right now I'm reading WWR for the 2nd time. And I haven't yet touched On the Fourfold Roots of the Principle of Sufficient Reason.

For TheWaWaR Schopenhauer also demands to read his doctor dissertation : On the fourfoot principle of Sufficient Reason

I lived in an Indian yoga ashram for several years. Schopenhauer fits well with the Vedas.

Great video. I disagree that one doesn't need much of Plato and Kant. Mainly because it should take you no more than three months to read and understand The Republic and Plato's ten most important dialogues and to read and digest the Critique of Pure Reason. Even if the link isn't very strong, it is an extremely valueable investment of time and it gives you an insight of what ideas occupied Schopenhauer's mind while he wrote what he did.

I love this channel, all the videos are very good. I would say that Kant and Plato should be read for their own sake if you are interested in philosophy. But if the goal is to study Schopenhauer, the main problem would be with Kant, since Plato's dialogues can be read fairly quickly. Plus, these works are largely artistic, they are a pleasure to read. Kant, on the other hand, is more difficult. I think you should concentrate on the Critique of Pure Reason, and specifically all the sections up to the schematism of pure reason (since Schopenhauer's critique is centered on the table of categories, and he fully adopts the transcendental aesthetics). It's not a big deal, and moreover there's an understandable exposition there - Kant's language deteriorates, beginning with schematism. Our beloved Schopenhauer noted this as well. Then you should read the Critique of Practical Reason, which is also quite short. You can also engage Kant's own shorter works, such as "Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics".

Great channel! Disagree here though… Start with ‘Parerga and Paralipomena’, no doubt! Better yet, try to find a translation of Schopenhauer’s ‘Eudämonologie [Die kunst, glücklich zu sein order]’ (a.k.a “The Art of Being Happy”— Franco Volpi’s edition, it’s available in many languages: “L’art d’etre heureux”, “El arte de ser feliz”, “L’arte de essere felici“) Now THAT’s where you start! If you only read ‘The World as Will and Representation’ you ARE MISSING THE BEST, Schopenhauer’s most mature and wisest works, the ones that made him famous and hugely influential. And also please listen to good Arthur’s advice and DO study the fundamentals of Buddhism (the Four Noble Truths), at least!
