Top Balkan Countries by Tourist Industry Revenues

The Balkans also known as the Balkan Peninsula, is a geographic area in Southeast Europe with various definitions and meanings, including geopolitical and historical. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch throughout the whole of Bulgaria from the Serbian–Bulgarian border to the Black Sea coast. It had a geopolitical rather than a geographical definition, further promoted during the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the early 20th century.

The definition of the Balkan Peninsula's natural borders do not coincide with the technical definition of a peninsula and hence modern geographers reject the idea of a Balkan peninsula, while scholars usually discuss the Balkans as a region. The term has acquired a stigmatized and pejorative meaning related to the process of Balkanization, and hence the preferred alternative term used for the region is Southeast Europe.

I’m not from the Balkans at all but I think Albania is a very underrated tourist location. When I went there I loved it, it’s got some of the most beautiful natural sights I’ve ever seen, from the Blue Eye in Sarande to the amazing Alps. So cheap too in comparison to other countries. Definitely recommend :)

Thanks for this stat! But I think you should include Turkey in the Balkans, as well. 🙂  And as a Romanian, I want to comment that we should be doing do better. I hope that by 2030 we will develop the tourism industry a lot more...

I mean, if Prince Charles saw fit to purchase a summer retreat in Transylvania, we obviously have some nice areas to visit — and the seaside + Delta can be greatly improved also.

The tourist attractions in the South-West of the country — the Iron Gates National Park; Nerei & Carașului Gorges; Cerna Valley; Retezat National Park; Valcea & Gorj counties (with Transalpina, Sohodol Gorge, Jiu Defile; Ocnele Mari salt mine; Constantin Brancusi sculptural ensemble; old picturesque monasteries, etc.); or Craiova city (with Nicolae Romanesu park, they say 3rd largest in Eastern Europe; the Botanical Garden, the Art Museum & Mihai Viteazul square, etc.); and several ancient ruins in the region — should be invested in & promoted more by our Ministry of Tourism.

And ofc, the many many sites in Moldova. Romania has the potential to do a lot more in this sector.

In 2018 i was in Budva-Muntenegro, in 2019 in Paralia Katerini-Grece, in 2020 Balcic-Bulgaria....in 2021 i go in Danube Delta-Romania !

Romanias tourism is flourishing, well not now because of covid 19, but in 2019 it was on fire, more and more tourists choose Romania, and it makes us a lot of money
