I compare Klotz Joe Bonamassa signature cable, Klotz La Grange, and Titanium cables against a cheap Fender cable.

The tonal difference comes from the cable capacitance. The cable forms an RC lowpass filter with the output impedance of the signalsource and the capacitance of the cable. This will be very noticable whenever you drive a cable with a high impedance source, like a passive guitar pickup. You can kinda think of it as like gradually turning down the tone knob on your guitar.

A "better" cable will have less capacitance per meter, than a "bad" one. The overall capacitance a cable has is just the product of it's lenght and relative capacitance. Now the higher the overall capacitance is, the lower the cutoff frequency will be. If you use a low impedance source to drive the cable, like a buffer, a pedal or active pickups this lowpass effect will be negligible, because the cutoff frequency will be way above the human hearing range. So no need to junk that red cable, just make sure to use it after a buffer.

Some people actually like the high end roll off of a "bad" cable, so the technically better cable might sound worse to them, than an technically inferior cable.
That whole tonal diagramm and polarity thing is marketing BS.

I’m stunned that there’s such a difference

Oh man. This is a rabbit hole I don’t want (and can’t afford) to go down! What next - swapping out all the patch cables on your board?! Crazy the difference between the cheap Fender cable and the others.

For the record I have MXR cables that were about £15 each, and EBS HP patch cables. No complaints.

Klotz Titanium and La Grange have been my only cables for more than a decade and I wouldn't change 'em for any other! great video as always, Michael!

Man, when my Mogami broke I suffered for a month until I realized it was under warranty. Really opened my eyes to the importance of quality cables. Needless to say, I exchanged my cable and got my tone back.

This is video people need to see and hear. Great idea for a video and love the insight. Thank you! Guess I need a new cable.

Been using Mogami in the studio and in the rig for years now, they are my gold standard.

Nice comparison! I dig Evidence Audio for studio cables, solid not stranded for reduced skin effect. Solid conductors even make a huge difference with power cords, Tony at Evidence told me to test the theory using Romex 12awg and marine grade or hospital grade plugs and I could not believe the difference my amp sounded, even more difference than guitar cable.

I always believed in using good cables just because I could hear the difference, same with pedal patch cables. And this video proves it too.

What's amazing is all the old records that were recorded in the 60's, 70's, 80's is the sound everyone is after and all they ever used were crappy cables compared by the "new" standards.

You gotta admit Klotz is a terrible name when you’re trying to highlight uninhibited pristine flow of audio through a cable 😂 but once I got past that, (which is a personal problem I just have to get over) I was thoroughly impressed! Zero klotting factor if you will! Nicely demoed sir - enjoyed it as always! 🤘🏼

Great comparison! I think the takeaway with this sort of thing is that it matters if you want it to. If you can only afford a Pig Hog off the wall just rock that and don't worry about it, but if you can hear the difference and want to experiment it's fun. I see the cable as a quick way to tweak my signal at the input before it hits anything else. I used to be all about getting the lowest cap possible but I came to prefer a middle ground because something about a slight high end roll off just "sounds like an album" to me in the same way alder or a Greenback does. These days my favorites are Gotham GAC-1 and Mogami 2524. My Tyler is also very hifi (ash body and ebony board - no lack of transient) so I'll often use it with the 2524 to warm it up a little bit. The Gotham sounds so hot and full range, great for guitars that are all mids.

I just looked up Mogami Gold instrument cable and it lists as 130 pf/m versus the La Grange 65 pf/m.
