SLS Green 'Run' - Where Do We Go From Here?

preview_player
Показать описание
We will discuss what went wrong and what went right in the SLS Green Run. What could this mean for the future of Artemis and the SLS?

EVERYONE will be allowed to participate. I'm not sure how many moderators we will have, so please try to wait for a question to be answered before asking another. Chat with each other as much as you like, of course.

The live portion will be free of ads, but the recorded version will have ads. Please forgive me. Times are a little tough right now.

I worked at Rocketdyne back in the '90s when it was owned by Boeing. I was part of the team that designed the engine control unit for the RS-68 engine. The guy who ran that project was the most extreme example of the Dunning-Kruger effect I ever seen; he decided to put a microcontroller in the unit (which wasn't needed because he already had a FPGA that could've done the whole thing in harware) and laughed when someone mentioned the issue of software reliability; he thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard, and said "software doesn't break!" He also had about 20 full-time SW engineers writing firmware. I think they spent about 18 months, so about 30 man-years. Guess how big the program space was. 2 freaking kilobytes! That's 30 man-hours per byte of code. And I could list dozens of other things he did that were just as dumb.

It’s going to be extremely funny when SLS and Starship are launching at the same time🤣 Comparing their cost and capabilities

Orion should just launch on Falcon heavy for mission one and continue to fly them until SLS is available. SLS is a southern jobs program. Let them work on it. But Orion needs to fly its mission this year.

Just saw that there was indication of the protective blanket on that engine burned through. You can see it in a picture. That must be where there was some flashing during and after test. Search for
"Major Component Failure (MCF) burns a hole in the Thermal Protection Blanket of Engine-4 during Aborted Green Run Hot Fire Test of the SLS Rocket that will be used for Artemis-I"

Agree completely with your assessment. Also, having worked with government contracts, no way there is any penalty for not meeting milestones. Big corporations have better lawyers than the government because they can pay more.

I personally don't care for politics but I really do care about humans going back to the moon and other planets. Let's go #TeamSpace!!!

The only way SLS could reach orbit, would be in the payload bay of a Starship

The best questions are the tough ones..." Tough, not fluff".
With all the newer aerospace companies, the old school type " old boys network" companies are going to have to get out of the past and catch up, or go under.
Space X has been the swift kick in the butt that the human race needs when it comes to space exploration...

I have been around Elon for 25 years. He is painfully shy and incredibly sensitive. The person you need to interview Tom Mueller the chief engineer for Starship.

I still don't get why the Orion needs a heat shield. Without the heat shield there would not be any need for a separate service module (major cost savings). The moon mission could dock with the space station and transfer people and goodies. Am I wrong?

i watched that SLS stream ... it was supposed to go perfectly if nasa wanted to launch this year... only 1 minute out of 8 ??? delays and further delays, that is what we have come to expect from SLS and i dont think it will be any different now

The RS-25 outputs around 2000 kN of thrust? That would be similar to the Raptor.

Did you mean lunar module rather than service module with regards to apollo 8?

Sls is 2 billion dollars per lunch. Starfish is 2 million dollars for lunch, dinner and breakfast.
