Legit "small talk" tips: Ask people about themselves, make them lead the conversation. People love talking about themselves. If they mention something you have in common, latch onto that.
Really good general use questions to ask:
"are you from here originally/where are you from?" If they aren't from the area and you've been to the city/state they are from, make a comment about something you like about that place.
"Where did you go to school? /what did you Major in? /where do you work/what do you do?" <-- good questions for general networking. If they mention a school or major, ask them why they chose that or what they liked about it. If they are talking about work, ask them when their busy times are, what does their day to day look like.
I've had the most small talk success by just listening to what people have to say and asking open ended questions to keep them talking. You will make a bigger impression with people if you're curious about who they are as a person instead of telling them both yourself.
