Not sure which way to turn your rad valve and need to turn your radiator off? Al takes you through the most common types of radiator valves. (NB if you turn the lock shield valve off, do remember how many turns it took to turn off and turn on the same amount when turning back on)

I know it seems super basic, but I've just moved to London from Australia - where no heating is really required - and this has had me baffled. So, thankyou!

This looks really helpful.

My radiator has type 2 valve showed in the video on both sides of the radiator. Which side of the radiator valve do I turn to turn the radiator off?? Many thanks!!!

As an Asian, I have been sleeping without turning on the heater in my room for 4 days until I accidentally touched the heater in washroom... I thought the central heater would do all the job...

I think for the more modern ones, it's pretty obvious as they have all the numbers on, like Al showed at the start. But for the older types that don't, or for those that are different then this is very useful indeed. Cheers Al!

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to explain even simple things! - In terms of the different valves, I figured out that all my radiators have at the bottom on one side a simple (non-thermostatic) manual valve and on the other side a Lockshield valve, and on the top one bleeding valve. Now, when draining the central heating system, do I need to fully open all manual and Lockshield valves right from the start, and after a while also open all bleeding valves? - Referring to Lockshield valves, What is their function? Do they simply control how much water exits the radiator? When do they need to be fully closed? If I close them, would then the next radiator down the line not get any hot water? Your answers would help me a great deal, including to figuring out how the three radiators upstairs and the three downstairs in my home are connected to one another.
