For anyone new here that's watching this.

I recently put in a 7200rpm drive specifically for Killzone 2 and it makes a world of difference. The little areas of the game where it stops to load in a new part of the game basically stops your progress and sucks out immersion you had. A 7200rpm instantly fixed it and new checkpoints were almost instant. An ssd would do the same thing but since ssd's only take advantage of very few games on the ps3, a regular 7200 hdd will be perfectly fine and I saw no reason to spend the extra money for one.

In reality, the newer 500-700GB, 7, 200k hdd's(used to upgrade) run MUCH cooler then the drives used by SCoA in the ps3 slim

Watching this video in 2024... like 14 years later... my only pain in this time on earth is.. not 2tb 7200rpm that I can format for 1.5gb use and the cost of a 2TB SSD is like double of what I can get a second hand ps3 for lol

pretty sure the stock drive is like this mainly to keep the console affordable for consumers. same with nintendo with the WiiU, they made it so you can connect an external hard drive of up to 1TB. with only 8 to 32GB of internal storage so the console can remain affordable.

Yes the newer raptors are 2.5 but what people fail to realize is how different it is from a standard 2.5 drive. All desktop drives require both 5v and 12v power to operate, while notebook drives require only 5v. Not only that, but the velociraptor is thicker than an average notebook drive basically double the height of a standard 2.5 drive, and WILL NOT FIT in a PS3 no matter how hard you try. And also will not work in a laptop because of the different power requirement.

I noticed with my stock 80gb 5400 rpm seagate hard drive while playing Rage the textures with blurry with pop ups. . I upgraded to a WD 750gb 7200 rpm Scorpio black and not only did rage's blurry textures disappeared but it also loaded up much faster. Mlb 13 the show loads up much faster too. I would recommend upgrading to this drive to everyone.

@TheJeffzorn No, that is incorrect. The temp difference is minimal not enough to melt solder we are talking 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit. So far out of all the forum/product reviews i have read, which is a lot!, for the best dollar to applied speed and dollar per gig this is one of the best drives on the market which is now in a 750gb size. And for all you ALL CAPS people....Cool your freaking jets plz. Thank You

@TheGamerField I have purchased a WD Scorpio black 2.5" 750GB laptop HDD, and am finished installing it as I write this. Now I'm just waiting for the 160GB backup, I made to finish loading

@thousandyoung Well I have to agree with you there. My veiwsonic has nowhere near the response of my Bravia 40-EX4. I also would say that if you bought a ps3 why would you put a crappy HDD in it? If your gonna replace at least put back same manufacturer drive instead of off brand but the big four in HDD manus. can still be trusted. (Samsung, Hitachi, Seagate and WD.

@RenegadeGarrus Thanks for the link. And I meant full Game backups playable off of the HDD so I don't have to throw my disc in every time i play.

@razer He wasn't showing joining a game, it was the map load time, that changed. But to not confuse, he shouldn't have used a internet game.

@SAndrews24 Unless your playing your PS3 in a 90*f room there will be no difference. The 7200RPM drives put out Negligible amounts of extra heat compared to a 5400. In carious laptop shootouts they compaire battery life and even gauge the power usage between the two and the difference is about 3 watts when under full use. To take this into perspective your fat PS3s use over 200 watts at full load. Meanwhile the slims barely break 100.

If you want speed go 7200 rpm. It you want capacity 5400.

Scratch what I said about the 7200 rpm being the same, I realized that it loads 10% faster on the fourth load for every game.

@MastaHuey Yeah but they have to load the data from the disc to the hard drive first before you can play a level, just watch your hdd light between loading levels, I believe it's because a lack of ram, with flash memory you would have 10x the performance but the costs would be higher.

no matter what your running for a HDD as long as you got your console in a vented area, the ps3s cooling system will hold up just fine. i guess if you wanted to place a second fan similar to the Intercooler (ie 360) you wouldnt see an overheat risk. just blow the dust out every month. or get fancy and water cool it. lol

@brubawil87

Believe me, it does, but it may be because the ps3 has issues accesing data on that particular drive model. It is the same as the people that don't notice the differences in hdtvs response time, THERES a HUGE difference from each tv set when it comes to color, picture quality and displaying full framerate effectively.

@thousandyoung Game speed will not decrease with a faster drive. Its Physically impossible. But what is not stated is that a lot of the ps3 relies on the cache of HDD which stock is 8mb and his tested drive is 16mb. Also drives have Sata and Sata Rev.2. 1.5 GB/s and 3.0 GB/s transfer respectively. Ps3 has Sata. 1.5 GB/s Not taking advantage of the new revision as it was not standard at release. Then there is The BD speed which limits the HDD. Games that use the HDD only will benefit best.
