In case this needs the be said, this does not apply to GPUs with only 4 lanes (pcie 4.0x4), you get massive loses just from going down to pcie 3.0

Depends on the application. Any game that takes a lot of cache will bring your card to its knees.

The issue with PCIe Scaling Test it doesn't show the difference with CPU. It should've been the best cpu for PCIe 3.0

This has to do with the connection speed. The CPUs supporting these standards would be much more of a bottleneck.

What this does tell me that new gpus could very comfortably move to pciex8 gen 5, opening up more lanes for other devices.

With the new pcie 5 ssds coming ill be able to have pcie 4.0x8 so this is good to know

this os actually pretty useful info. i’ve been thinking of getting a new GFX card to replace my 1070, but my mobo is 3.0 and i was wondering just how big of a hit that would be.

ofc i’d like to upgrade the whole rig, but if i can get and use the card now while i save up for other parts.

This is only tested with changing PCIe versions on a modern motherboard. When you actually put the gpu in an old PC for real, the old cpu and old ram would bottleneck the gpu like crazy, so the actual loss in performance would be much much more

did you take into consideration the bottleneck of cpu?

Honestly its more likely to be bottlenecked by old cpu than it is the interface. PCIe is so fast its essentially impossible to bottleneck the interface.

Pcie generations go up but nothing is using the extra bandwidth they supply. Your CPU is going to be out dated before your pcie or nvme speeds are. (Note: direct storage was built for pcie 3.0)
